re: rimi and her father (who is a minor npc in the kurenai delivery quests HAHA,)

[ #rimi, #cielfic ]

jikkan is as rimi remembers him to be, even after all these years. his hair has grown longer and his scales have grown larger but he walks with the same amount of grace and intimidation as he strides towards her, always (always) with a look of disapproval on his face, and rimi is quick to look down on reflex, to brace for a scolding. ā€œthank you, rimi,ā€ he says instead, and she flinches without even thinking, but the words catch her and she looks up in surprise. jikkanā€™s gaze is focused on kurenai in the distance, dressed in a hingan kimono and marveling at the wares on display at the stall. his eyes soften, andā€” ā€”it is filled with a warmth she was never familiar with as a child, full of acceptance and love, a sense of belonging and pride. praise for a job well done even if it isnā€™t. the unconditional love of a parentā€” ā€”rimi feels her heart suddenly burn, and she grasps weakly at the place where it would be, her nails picking up nothing but fabric. her mouth is dry but her eyes are not. ā€œi have looked over kurenai since she was a child,ā€ jikkan continues, unaware of rimiā€™s sudden distress. ā€œand i have never seen her so happy. i can see earlier that my opinions of the surface were misguided, and i thank you.ā€rimiā€™s hand tightens on her clothing, scratches her skin underneath. itā€™s as if the air has been taken from her lungs in one fell swoop and she cannotā€”cannotā€”cannot breathe. she gasps, and then covers her mouth. ā€œi have a daughter,ā€ jikkan finally turns to look at her, and rimi stills as if struck, her eyes flickering up briefly to meet his. ā€œor, used to. she left years ago. you remind me of her, sometimes.ā€ ā€œi-is that so?ā€ rimi barely manages to stutter out, feeling her heartbeat against the palm of her hand. ā€œiā€™m... flattered.ā€ jikkan nods once, then turns his eyes back to kurenai, who has already moved on to another stall. ā€œi should catch up with her before something happens. thank you, adventurer.ā€ as jikkan strides away, rimi watches him take kurenaiā€˜s side and gently chide her for going off without him. her heart, her heart, oh gods, does it hurt, does it twist. her eyes well up and her breath catches and she thinks why, why, why, couldnā€™t you have loved me like that, come home for your daughter in her empty house with an empty motherā€” ā€œrimi?ā€ sananaā€™s voice floats up to her. ā€œrimi, are you alright? whatā€™s going on?ā€ something wet hits the back of the hand thatā€™s trying to grasp her heart and rimi realizes belatedly that she is crying, her vision is blurring, but she cannot stop looking at the silhouettes of jikkan and kurenai in the distance as they go through the market. ā€œiā€™mā€”ā€œ she doesnā€™t know what to say, what to do. rimi tries to wipe her tears with her hands but only feels her eyes getting wetter. ā€œi-i donā€™t know. i donā€™t... d-donā€™t... know...ā€ sanana looks between her and jikkan, and then back again. ā€œrimi...ā€ her voice is careful. ā€œthe inn is nearby, should we go there first to wait for them?ā€ rimi hiccups, but nods, and lets the lalafell lead her away. the pain in her chest does not leave.
