In this episode of Writer Larry Unplugged, I pay tribute to my beloved Aunt Sandra who recently passed, and share my thoughts on death and how my thoughts have changed as I've gotten older.

Malanggan carved wood mask from the complex system of traditional culture, religious rituals, and intricate wood carvings from the New Ireland province in Papua New Guinea.
The people who create and practice Malanggan traditions belong to various distinct language groups and indigenous communities living in northern and northwestern New Ireland (such as the Tigak, Nalik, Madak, and Kara groups). Malanggan (also spelled malagan or malangan) describes the elaborate mortuary ceremonies, sacred masks, and sculptures used to honor the dead and affirm clan identity.
Rituals are held months or years after a person dies to honor and dismiss the spirit.
These events are large community festivals filled with feasting, dancing, and music rather than private grief.
The ceremonies affirm clan identity, pass down land rights, and combine with the initiation of young people.
