The question now is whether Canada's economy can slow enough to calm bond markets without slowing so much that equity valuations lose their footing. #TSX #BondYields #CanadianEconomy

The quiet north by Robert Perez

Canada is not assembling an empire, building aircraft carriers by the dozen or announcing a Canadian century. Its rise is quieter and potentially more consequential.

Canada’s institutions are stable, profitable, and increasingly organized around preserving what already exists. Who are they actually for?

Canada’s institutions appear stable, but their incentives increasingly protect existing wealth over new capacity. A new essay & podcast on housing, finance, insurance, productivity, and public purpose.

Canada is not facing a housing crisis, a productivity problem, a credit-access gap, and an insurance crisis as unrelated policy failures. These are different expressions of the same institutional drift.

Banks prefer recoverable collateral. Regulators protect stability. Homeowners defend accumulated equity. Pension funds pursue promised returns. Governments avoid housing corrections and financial disorder. Insurers preserve solvency as correlated risks become more expensive. Each actor has a defensible reason for behaving as it does.

Together, however, these decisions produce an economy increasingly organized around protecting existing wealth, existing assets, and existing institutional arrangements. Capital flows more easily toward what can already be measured, priced, and repossessed than toward retraining, entrepreneurship, technological adoption, or productive capacity that does not yet exist.

The Hallmark Patient explores this process through housing, banking, corporate finance, insurance, competition, productivity, and political inertia. It rejects the emotionally satisfying explanation of a hidden financial conspiracy. The deeper problem is more difficult: a system without a master, in which individually rational choices repeatedly converge on a collectively damaging outcome.

The essay & podcast ultimately asks how essential institutions should be judged. Stability and profitability matter, but they are incomplete measures. Institutions must also be evaluated by what they make possible, who can realistically access what they offer, whose risks they absorb, and whether public privilege continues to correspond to public function.

Finance is indispensable. That is why it deserves democratic judgment rather than automatic deference.
