~300 mostly #Black Republicans held a rally in #Camilla, #Georgia, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1868, and were told by the sheriff to disarm & disperse. When they refused, he deputized a #racist mob to commit the #CamillaMassacre. ~15 were killed, 40 wounded. It was denied until 1998.

A statue known as the “Expelled Because of their Color” monument, was erected to honor the Original 33 was put on the Georgia State Capitol grounds in 1976.

In the weeks following the #CamillaMassacre, #WhiteSupremacists from Camilla started beating Black American residents in the surrounding area & threatened to kill them if they voted in the next election. None of the surviving Original 33 were voted back into office.

The Original 33 refused and when they entered the courthouse square, they were fired on by the sheriff and a mob of more deputized #WhiteSupremacists. 15 marchers were killed and another 40 were wounded.
