🌿 Teaching Thursday

I love teaching Nature-Inspired Writing at PCC.

Last night, we shared stories from the Learning Garden and explored how a dog, an ant, or a tree might see the world.

Time outdoors helps me slow down and pay attention. I love hearing what my students notice.

Did you know mushrooms 'talk' to one another? Some can recognise up to 50 'words' - though they use pulses rather than tongues.

Today's Creative writing prompt on Substack is: if you could talk to your local mushrooms, what would you tell them? 🍄

Walking through the misty moors this morning, the hurlers stone circles and the Cheesewring were lost in the mists I didn’t hear the hurlers shout but I did hear a little wren singing on the fence to the mineshaft. #naturewriting

Every morning at this early hour
(only a little after four thirty am),
I see Fox trotting down the street,
going about their lawful occasions,
while I am watching from my window,
always thrilled by a sight that's sweet.

Symptoms have been flaring for a week so I’m reminded to hold this gift made by @annakwood.bsky.social, who’s ill herself. Check out: Anna Wood - A Life in Nature on substack.

Here comes Mr Fox
casually trotting
down the street,
unfazed by the human
gazing admiringly
from their window;
a quick glance
into my eyes,
a brief flick of the tail
before you pass
out of my sight.

We’re a reading app, so naturally we love a shelf about reading... water. And land. And ancient paths.

How to Read Water, @NaturalNav

England: A Natural History, @JLewisStempel

The Old Ways, Robert Macfarlane

3 books that teach you to read the world itself.

It is the first day of Navratri, the best time to revisit this piece.
I wrote about how attachment is also an important aspect of life and is often overlooked while the world constantly talks about detachment/surrender.

Yesterday was World Mental Health Day, which was the theme of the #DailyNature creative prompt.

I'm sorry for the delay, but I was wrestling with my internet like mad and wanted to go explore the forest.

So, here it is anyway -

How is everyone?

Research rabbit hole this week: Malham Cove's limestone pavement was in a Harry Potter film, and peregrine falcons have nested on the cliff since 1993. Neither fact made the poem. Both nearly broke my schedule.

#NatureWriting #Poetry

A cinematic, wide-angle shot of the Malham Cove limestone pavement in North Yorkshire. The flat stone clints are weathered and silver-grey, deeply scarred by dark, moss-lined grykes. Sharp, low October light casts long shadows across the jagged, lunar texture of the Jurassic rock. In the background, the sheer limestone cliff edge meets a misty, sprawling valley under a heavy, bruised sky. The atmosphere is ancient and silent, emphasizing the raw, geological endurance and physical weight of the landscape.
