My region is experiencing a huge loveliness of ladybird beetles. They are everywhere.
I mostly have flowering groundcovers instead of lawn so even walking around the garden is an exercise in attention and care.

A stem with five, five petalled dark pink flowers. Four of the flowers contain a common ladybird beetle; the fifth flower has a fly - under appreciated pollinators in Australian gardens.

Spider too small to see, hiding in a crack with her cast-off legs. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/10/thir... #VancouverIsland #Spiders #Arachnids #Invertebrates #Arachtober #NaturePhotography

Photo taken by mistake. A crack in the paint, with an invisible spider (to the naked eye). In the centre, a dark spider; just a blob with legs. The legs are pale greyish brown, with black knees. And hairy. She has just molted; on the right are her empty legs. And a little grey "football"; I have no idea what that is. Background; greyish white, gloss paint.

It’s #October, but because of the unseasonably warm weather, we still have the odd #dragonfly flitting about. #InsectThursday #Insects #Invertebrates #Dragonflies #Fall #PNW #Nature #Photography #GoOutside #Breathe #Notice #Don’tGiveUp

Closeup of a paddle-tailed darner dragonfly clinging to a pale green reed with its spiky black legs. It’s got sky blue and dark brown and black “mosaic” patterns on its long abdomen and thorax, it’s lacy black and clear wings are shining in the late afternoon sun, and its eyes are also sky blue with a swath of black. It’s facing upwards. We found this fellow by a pond in eastern Idaho in the autumn, several years ago.

Oh, to be a bunblebee, napping on a bed of dinner. #beeposting #invertebrates

A bumblebee rests on a marigold. Her antennae are low, and the camera is very close
 She snoozin'!

Grasshoppers are still active in the garden like this metallic bronze and pink friend.

A Zebra Jumping #spider (Salticus scenicus) on a fence post in the garden. She was very active, but also fairly tolerant of a human waving a camera and diffuser in her face. #arachtober #wildlifefrommywindow #invertebrates #arachnids

A very small spider viewed from head on, and slightly off their right hand side. It's on rough sawn wood of a fence post which is a light brown. The depth of focus is very shallow, and so the foreground and back ground are quite blurred. But the face of the spider, with it's large black two main eyes, and the small eyes adjacent to them, is in focus. It has quite large, shiny black jaws. But it's legs, body and head are covered in short hairs, mainly white, but also some black, particularly on top of it's head, and the occaisional light brown ones. It gives it an attractive appearance as if it's been painted with thin strokes of water colour paint.

How to create a butterfly-friendly garden 🌼 email.butterfly-conservation.org/cr/AQjj5xYQ_...

My wildlife garden gives me so many hours of enjoyment, just watching the critters. The more unkempt the better it is for the #Invertebrates

Wednesday 14th October
Found this 12mm long caterpillar/larva on a fence rail under Beech along the Kelvin Walkway. I've hit a complete blank as to what it could be.

This is a common slug that is found in Fujairah, UAE. This one is Hypselodoris nigrostriata - and is part of a wider complex of closely related species.

Work in progress.
Been drawing Jumping Spiders last few days and I now have enough to make bookmarks!
Salticids are my favourite spiders, they were the 'gateway' species that helped me overcome childhood 'fear' of spiders.

A sheet of white paper with five black and white ink drawings of different Jumping Spiders. Top row (left to right): Neon reticulatus, Evarcha falcata and Attulus saltator. Bottom (left to right): Salticus cingulatus and Euophrys frontalis. An A4 sheet of white paper in portrait format, divided by black horizontal lines into five equal rectangles to make a set of bookmarks. Each rectangle has black and white pen and ink drawings of the five different Jumping Spiders. Each spider is labelled with its scientific name below the image. The first two bookmarks have the same arrangement of spiders but the other three are all slightly different either in the order of the species or in their orientation.

Here is one from the archives - the beautiful Godiva quadricolor from Fujairah, UAE. I’ve been going through my old photos in preparation for a Sea Slug exhibition that will take place in Abu Dhabi next month.

Small cellar spider, Pholcus phalangioides, with her packed lunch. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/10/some... #VancouverIsland #Spiders #Arachnids #Invertebrates #Arachtober #NaturePhotography

A pale brown spider hangs upside-down, holding on with her long, long legs; hairy legs, with dark "knees". The spider's abdomen is silky, rectangular, the color of café au lait. Her cephalothorax (head end) is a paler brown, translucent. She's eating a small fly or perhaps a tiny moth, tightly wrapped in her silk. She hangs inside a small lampshade; good lighting there attracts moths.

We found a tobacco hornworm in our garden! The chonkiest wild caterpillar I've seen to date!! It's so fat and cute! (its poops are HUGE!!)

This guy will overwinter as a pupa, then emerge in the spring as an adult. If I'm really lucky maybe I can see it as an adult...! 😍

Walk update: Honey bees seem to have moved on, but bumbles are still in abundance. They're also older and slower, prone to napping and easy to photograph.

Probably next month, I'll stop seeing bees on my walks. For now, I'm visiting them as much as I can.
