An amazing feature of Blackpool Sands, Dartmouth, Devon, at the northern end of Start Bay, is the stunning sea sculpted sandstone/siltstone rocks. On 27 June, the water was a cooling 17.9°C while the heat wave was giving us air of 28.5. #BlackpoolSands #StartBay #dartmouth #devon

Shimmering shoals of Lesser Sand Lance (Ammodytes tobianus) aka Sand Eels are a feature of the #Devon coast, here at Blackpool Sands. At night and in the colder months, they spend much of their time buried in sand for protection, resurfacing to feed and during spawning. #fish #teamfish #marinelife

At Blackpool Sands, excited to see my 1st UK Painted #Gobies (Pomatoschistus pictus); a handsome fish. But saw few European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) on the #Devon coast in June. Atlantic Beadlet Anemone (Actinia equina) course in evidence & a few Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis). #invert #goby

At #BlackpoolSands #Devon plenty of usual fish, Atlantic Pollock (Pollachius pollachius, in the cod family) & Shanny (Lipophrys pholis); especially like the expression of the ♂️ in black breeding colours which he has taken on to attract a ♀️ & is now likely guarding his nest. #fish #blenny #marinelife

Another astonishment at Blackpool Sands #Devon on 27 June was vast congregation of Spiny Spider Crabs (Maja brachydactyla) at base of cliffs, having migrated from deeper water to moult; safety in numbers, newly moulted individuals sheltered in centre of the group. #crustacean #crab #crabs #invert

Also at Blackpool Sands #Devon, thrilled to see my 1st Sea Gooseberries (Pleurobrachia pileus), less so the alien #invasivespecies Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi) introduced from West Atlantic in 1980s, likely via ship ballast in Black Sea, which competes with the Gooseberry. #ctenophore #combjelly

#Devon's coast in June was superb for Comb Jellies (Ctenophores); had my 1st encounter with 3 species of these harmless beauties. At Blackpool Sands here's the amazing living disco ball that is Common Northern Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis infundibulum), with its distinctive pair of fringed tentacles. 🧵

It was great to catch up with the NFU at the Dunster Show a few weeks ago and discuss the ongoing challenges facing farmers, including Bluetongue and member support. We have now agreed to hold regular meetings to discuss key issues and work together on solutions for our farmers.
