Some follow up on the Oregon transportation survey. While its not an exact comparison to the actual ODOT budget, it’s clear people want the state to prioritize and spend more money on road maintenance and on reliable transit

“The city must not assume” is the phrase I keep coming back to.
Not assume empty land.
Not assume illegitimacy means absence.
Not assume order only comes from above.
A city is planned, yes, but it is also continuously made by the people living in it.
And then there is the Islamabad that grew inside, beside and sometimes directly against that order.
#KatchiAbadi aren’t glitches in the city. They emerged because people needed somewhere to live near work when the formal city wasn’t accommodating them.
I keep thinking about Islamabad as a city built on a strange contradiction: it was planned with extraordinary confidence, but cities don’t stay obedient to drawings.
People move, work, improvise, settle, adapt. The city keeps happening anyway.
I knew OCC streets were getting a road diet down to single lanes, but I didn’t know they were also doing daylighting. It’s nice!
A few months ago I saw the announcement for this super sleek street-legal golf cart. Sure, it can win design awards and shuttle tourists around boutique hotels, but the more I thought about it, the more I believe it could be a huge stride for urbanism.
