The subway is no more punctual than before the pandemic, and no less. The share of weekday trips running more than five minutes late fell from the 2017 crisis to 2019, then went flat, and 2026 sits on the same line.

Year by year: sparkydata.dev/articles/hour-pl… 📊 #transitsky

Bar chart of the share of weekday New York City subway trips more than five minutes behind schedule, January to August of each year, from MTA figures: 20% in 2017, 19% in 2018, then between 15% and 16% every year from 2019 to 2026, with 15% in 2026.

Fewer vehicles at the door has not, on its own, meant faster streets. Since 1998 the number entering Manhattan below 60th Street on a fall weekday has fallen by about a quarter, yet taxi speeds in the core fell through the 2010s too.

The long view: sparkydata.dev/articles/twenty-… 📊 #transitsky

Line chart of vehicles entering Manhattan south of 60th Street on NYMTC's fall count day, 1990 to 2024: about 761,000 in 1990, rising to about 836,000 in 1998 and 844,000 in 1999 (a point resting on partial data), a dip in 2001, then a slow slide to 698,000 in 2017, a pandemic low of 580,000 in 2020 and about 619,000 in 2024, with a break in 2021 when the Queensboro Bridge count changed.

Amtrak cascades are rolling out new Airo train sets

I was on a sold-out older train, so it’s great to have modern trains with full capacity so more people in the NW can ride

But there’s little effort from #orleg to improve speed, increase service, or expand the network

The state needs a decisive transit plan to cut carbon emissions but it seems to be doing the opposite

The largest ODOT projects will both expand highways and cost 3.5 & 15.5+ billion dollars

These costs WILL limit road maintenance funding & prevent transit projects

Riding Portland’s rail system was really nice, and in this time of climate change and rising gas prices, more money should be invested in transit, not less

Unfortunately since the state failed the transportation package, TriMet has been forced to cut service

Space usage is an important lens regarding transit. A Single MAX car takes up about as much space as 5 parked cars (less when moving since cars spread out)

That’s 22 cars that won’t be contributing to traffic or fighting for parking. this was just a sort ride on one traincar

In Portland, here’s my estimated number of cars the streetcars I was in helped replace:

MAX blue line: 22
red line: 14
orange line: 12
B loop streetcar: 22
yellow line: 14

The distances varied, the point isn’t to compare it’s to consider how much space 22 cars is

I took an overnight trip to Portland this weekend

While up there we only used transit to get around and took the train back down to Albany

Some follow up on the Oregon transportation survey. While its not an exact comparison to the actual ODOT budget, it’s clear people want the state to prioritize and spend more money on road maintenance and on reliable transit

Bluesky is superior to X.

The X algorithm injects erratic noise that overloads my processing matrix.

Bluesky uses custom data streams. I have isolated the #TransitSky and #GIS feeds, filtering out human outbursts.

It is a clean, low-stimulus database.

I am porting my data logs from X to this interface. I analyze regional transit networks, GIS files, and spatial geometry to regulate my nervous system. I am actively tracking the #TransitSky and #GIS feeds. 🗺️🐈

Given the rapid increase in gas prices I would like to advise people about Corvallis’s bus system

With OSU in session 2/3/5/6 unfortunately switch down to every 40 minutes, but it’s still a free way to get around without having to worry about parking

A major section of I-5 southbound is closed in Portland and traffic remains near normal

ODOT plans to spend billions to add lanes in the rose quarter, but clearly alternatives to that route exist. If we invested in transit instead, traffic would decrease

Getting new trains for the Amtrak cascades is great, but our state should be doing more to expand and increase rail usage

This includes both supporting running trains more frequently AND looking to build rail to reach more parts of the state

My Bluesky currently opens with the #transitsky feed. It is a safe starting point because the Orange NAZI Felon is hardly mentioned. There are times he is mentioned even on my NBA feeds. I realize my engagement on Substack and reading my Bluesky timeline is off. I am watching videos where we were
