So much for tame. The Council is breaking down over the New North Citizens Council grant that Councilor Hurst has claimed is a conflict (I don't believe it is). Councilors are arguing abotu the rules. #mapoli #spfldpoli

As is often the case in bills like this, the Council would have to vote to accept this law at a later date. #mapoli #spfldpoli

Now the Council is debating a resolution in support of a state law. I don't like these resolutions because they descend into a debate about the substance of the bill as if their support/opposition has any political consequence for the Council itself. #mapoli #spfldpoli

The Council ended up passing the ordinance that pauses the Food Truck Ordinance that they thougth they passed in July. Got it? #mapoli #spfldpoli

The Council is tripping over the Food Truck Ordinance. In my estimate, nothing passed last meeting so technically, the ordinance is operative, but the admin is not enforcing it. #mapoli #spfldpoli

A HUD grant that includes money going to New North Citizens Council passes 9-1 (2 absent, Perez recused). Councilor Hurst, who has raised issues with NNCC and the clerk, votes no. #mapoli #spfldpoli

Fairly tame #Springfield city Council meeting so far today. Surprised nobody used the casino mitigation fund adoption as an excuse to talk about MGM's attempts to sell. #mapoli

Workers deserve their fair share. They deserve respect. And they deserve a seat at the table.

For many MA students, today is the first day of school, but some favorite teachers won’t be there.

This summer, I met educators cut from classrooms. Meanwhile, Fair Share raised $5.5B in FY24–25 for education and transit.

Massachusetts has the money. It must reach our schools.

Information is only empowering if people can access & understand it. On International Literacy Day we’re reminded that literacy is not just about reading. It’s about giving people the tools to ask questions & make informed decisions about issues that affect their lives. #mapoli

Members recently received a policy update regarding the PROTECT Act, signed into law last month.
In our September bulletin (watch your mailboxes!), we share the attached policy notes on legislative action regarding cell phones and the Freedom to Read law.

#MAEdu #mapoli

POLICY NOTES ON
LEGISLATIVE ACTION
• While both the Senate and the
House passed bills regarding cell
phone use in schools, the language
in the bills was very different.
Though the discussion was sent
to a conference committee, the
Legislature took no action before
the end of the formal session. No
legislation is expected this term;
policy regarding cell phones
remains a matter of local policy.
• The Freedom to Read law was
signed into law by Governor
Healey on August 10. This law
requires updates to policies on the
selection and challenge of library
materials. MASC is working with
the MA Library System, charged in
the law with creating model policy,
on redrafting model policy.
We will share this in an upcoming
newsletter
