Tagebucheintrag vom 9. September 1942 Wir saßen in der Kellerküche beim Frühstück, als eine größere Gruppe Gestapoleute zur Besichtigung des Hauses erschien. Hut auf den Köpfen, traten sie ein. »Aufstehen!« Ich stellte mich gehorsam neben meinen Stuhl. (Ich trug den Stern auf dem weißen Jackett.) Eva blieb sitzen, ohne den Blick vom Teller zu heben. Die Horde ging weiter. Ich hörte sie im Garten nach langer Besichtigung des Hauses lange diskutieren. In unserm Zimmer fanden wir nur einen dicken Zeitschriftenband deplaciert, den uns Frau Ziegler gestern geliehen. »Moderne Kunst«. Offenbar war hinter dem Titel die verbotene »entartete Kunst« gewittert worden. Es handelte sich aber um einen harmlosen Jahrgang wahrscheinlich vor 1911. - Es ist nun sehr möglich, dass wir schon in wenigen Tagen wieder die Wohnung wechseln müssen, es gibt schon zahlreiche Präzedenzfälle dieser Art. Alle Hausinsassen rechnen mit Hinauswurf. Wir werden uns jedenfalls mit Auspacken nicht übereilen.Diary entry on September 9, 1942 We were sitting at breakfast when a large group of Gestapo people turned up to make an inspection of the house. They came in wearing their hats. "Stand up!" I obediently stood beside my chair. (The star was on my white jacket.) Eva remained seated, without looking up from her plate. The horde passed on. After a long inspection of the house, I heard them talking in the garden for a long time. In our room only a fat periodicals volume, which Frau Ziegler had lent us, was out of place. Modern Art. Evidently they scented forbidden "degenerate art" behind the title. But it is a harmless volume, probably before 1911. - It is now very possible that in a few days, we shall be forced to change apartments again; there are already numerous precedents of this kind. Older residents are expecting to be thrown out. At any rate, we shall not be in a hurry to unpack.
