The women were Jewish slave labourers from Italy, France, Holland, Belgium, Poland and Czechoslovakia.
These photos from our archive, alongside others documenting the brutal Nazi slave labour system, are currently on display in our exhibition gallery.
By the end of August 1944, around one third of the 5.7m forced labourers in the Greater Reich were women. The majority of female forced labourers came from Eastern Europe. This series of photos was taken in Kaunitz following an evacuation march when the camp was liberated by American troops.
Since launching our digital archive last year we have been constantly updating the site to make as many of our collections as possible available to researchers around the world
There are now over 260,000 pages of evidence relating to the Holocaust and the Nazi era available online buff.ly/OaZa98s
