COLDER Come closer now, as you did in the Old days when warmth flowed. When Love held the cold at bay, stopped the Dark shaping me with its shadows. Now Everything drifts into new forms, still I Remember who you were. Claims once made lie broken as bridges Over rivers sealed by the ice of many winters. Light thins early; its meagre heat Drawing farther out each day. Every silence settles like fresh frost. Remember the sun, it will return to another sky.

i You, who have nothing wrong cannot imagine. The ashen-faced trudge along, their eyes beaming as they walk. In the old days everyone there knew the amusement won’t last. ii You arrive in the year of the ram, the rest is your journey now. Like the rest of us, you ran away once: such want in the air where I found you — our best years in the village fields. iii I used to find it barbaric, mother, in small distant cubes of light. It’s hideous to witness but but how beautifully she can dance, In my sleep Bei Dao’s voles are there and the low echo of a question.

In space there is a broadcast wall that travels and shakes ports of call to the Milky Way’s edge and ever on. If anyone ever hears those things morning DJs and telephone rings, will we remain or like Granny be gone?
