You, who have nothing wrong
cannot imagine.
The ashen-faced trudge along,
their eyes beaming as they walk.
In the old days everyone there knew
the amusement won’t last.

ii
You arrive in the year of the ram,
the rest is your journey now.
Like the rest of us, you ran away once:
such want in the air
where I found you —
our best years in the village fields.

iii
I used to find it barbaric, mother,
in small distant cubes of light.
It’s hideous to witness but
but how beautifully she can dance,
In my sleep Bei Dao’s voles are there
and the low echo of a question.
