day 18 - reason

CW: the aftermath of racism and general garlean conquest concerns

after fleeing the waking sands post massacre, amaris finds her reason to return and fight

"None of you get it do you?! Garlemald sees us all as lesser. It doesn't matter what race we are, only that we aren't Garlean. Every day they come closer and closer to taking our homes away from us just like they did to Ala Mhigo and the only way we can stop them is by working with each otber, not fighting each other!" Amaris sits quietly at the dinner table as she plays her words to the now departed angry hoard of Fallgourd Float residents back in her mind. She should have been calmer. She should have explained it more. The situation with Garlemald is serious and so is how people treat Jozol - how they treat the Ixal and other spoken races. Her fists clench around the hem of her dress. What if Garlemald takes the Twelveswood next? What happens to her parents? What happens to Jozol? Would they kill him like they killed the Scions? Would her parents be too old to be of use to them? Her head spins with "what ifs" and worries so much so that she feels she might burst. She can see from the corner of blurring vision how the three of them look at her softly, hesitant in ways you observe a newborn antelope.  Do they even understand how serious this is? Amaris tips her head up, blotchy cheeks and the whites of her eyes tinged red, and looks at the scene. It doesn't matter how awkward the moment feels, it matters that she can have it."Worry for me, you do not." Jozol says, stretching out a hand to meet her. "Used to it, Ia-" "You shouldn't have to be used to it." Amaris cuts him off. "What they said to you, how they acted, was wrong. It's always been wrong." She continues, tears building back up in her eyes and threatening to spill over. "You're right." Amaris' mother, Marga, begins as she moves from her chair to Amaris' side. "It isn't fair. I promise I will speak to the people and try to get them to see reason." Amaris looks at her mother almost wounded"You've said that before." Marga is taken aback, just a touch but enough to be noticed. "These things take time." She offers in reply. Amaris frowns and lets her gaze fall to the ground. She wants to believe her mother can make that change. That tomorrow morning, everything has miraculously fixed so that she and Jozol can go to the Bobbing Cork for honey muffins without anyone batting an eye. That won't happen. Not tomorrow or the day after that. These things take time, even if she wishes they didn't. Amaris wonders if Eorzea will even last that long. What will come first? Garlemald's conquest or freedom for all Eorzeans?Her teeth grit together at the reality. There is no future for any Eorzean if Garlemald isn't stopped. Amaris' eyes fall to her axe laid half hazardously at the door and she swallows around the air building up in her throat. There is no future for any Eorzean if she does not get back up and fight. Amaris stands abruptly, her chair screeching against the wood floors. Everyone's eyes dart to her, all concern and nothing else. "I have to go back." She begins. "The Scions...no...Eorzea needs me to go back." "There are other people who can fight this fight, Amaris." Her father, Mikos, rebuttals. "You could be killed." He adds, his tone softer. "I have to try." Amaris is unwavering despite how her lower lip shakes ”It's the right thing to do." Marga, Mikos, and Jozol look at Amaris intensely. She can't tell what emotions run through their heads and she is sure they cannot tell what runs through hers. They'll have to understand - to know that Eorzea and her people are worth the risk.

Bryony came up short in the entrance of the tower, where G'raha was now standing, blocking the door. "What are you doing?" His face was resolute, but there was a hint of regret in his now twin scarlet eyes. "I am truly sorry, Bryony. I must do this. You were there in the World of Darkness; you heard what Unei and Doga said. I am the only person left who can control the Crystal Tower—and I believe we were in agreement that it is far too dangerous to leave open, yes?" Tears burned in her eyes, and she felt like there was something stuck in her throat, making it nearly impossible to speak. She crossed her arms, more out of a desire to keep her emotions under control than an act of defiance. "And so you're going to seal yourself in there? You can't! There has to be another way!"

towards the end of this one i realized i was inadvertently leaning into a transfem narrative with a character i have never once considered as feminine, trans or otherwise, in the entire time he has existed in my brain 🤔

The moment doesn’t last; Niall is already looking back down to his blade, his hands already working over its length. “Nevertheless... You have my thanks, Kaizou.” Kaizou. He wonders: Caeso or Kaizou? Where does the difference lie, exactly? He thinks nothing of it when others call him by that other name, after all — Kaizou Redd, Warrior of Light, hero to Eorzea and lands far beyond — and yet, in his own mind, he never fails to think of himself by his own name — Caeso Rossarius, the spoiled, useless middle child of a Garlean lineage, powerless to bring anything of real worth to his family name, chased away on pain of death from the only success he’d ever found in life by forces far beyond his control. It isn’t as though he can simply choose not to be that man, that failure of a man he’s always been, no matter how many people might now see him as something entirely different — right? Kaizou... He wonders.

Lahabrea cleared his throat. Elidibus noticed, but most of the rest of the Convocation were pointedly avoiding the sparring match occurring between Azem and Pashtarot. Emet-Selch had his face in his hands as he slumped in his chair, and Mitron and Loghrif exchanged whispers. When Azem spoke, Nabriales leaned forward with interest, only to recoil at Pashtarot's yelling. Fandaniel was slightly panicked by the situation, turning his head back and forth to each speaker with his mouth agape. Halmarut mimed to Emmerololth, which they understood as "if they come to blows, are you healing?" and they shook their head in response. Altima seemed to be the only one enjoying herself, smiling widely as the so-called debate deteriorated.
