The situation is most dire and our dwindling team of heroes have their backs against the wall. We don't know how they will get out of a very tight situation. When the cavalry shows up, we all cheer and wait for them to defeat the enemy. Lower Decks did that a couple of times...

I enjoy scenes in which different team members contribute to providing a solution to get out of a predicament (e.g. TNG's "Disaster", DS9's "Starship Down" & more recently, SNW's "Off-Hour"). I liked Nahrat using his Horta abilities. Chapel and Tanzer also provided key ideas.

She originally thought that the Vulcans were more "book smart" rather than "street smart". It was through her observations and interactions with the Vulcans here which led her to change her mind and believe that Vulcans could be capable of being an aggressor.

I call it the "Han Solo maneuver"

It's exciting. The situation is dire, the audience had no idea how the heroes can get out of this, then someone swoops in to save the day. It's a huge relief to the audience--since it's a happy ending now. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekMyEnemyMyAlly

31. Based on an idea from Ael, Captain Suvuk used the Sunseed program to defeat some of the pursing Romulan fleet. The rest of the Federation fleet arrives to help. Why does the "cavalry arriving just in time" been a popular storytelling trope?

Sometimes I get lost on action sequences, so I was confused how Ael and Kirk were separated when they were just togher.

The section with T'Leiar was rough. I can't imagine that was easy for the Vulcans. It reminded me of Spock-Valeris in TUC. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekMyEnemyMyAlly

30. The focus shifted to Kirk, Ael & their strike team on the mission to rescue the Vulcans & destroy the research data as Romulan reinforcements start to arrive on the scene. What did you think about this section as their outlook become more dire?

I have to say Nahrat's adventure on the Big E was my favorite. I like to see another member of the Federation working in Starfleet. I loved the Horta because they are unique and we hardly see them anymore.

Spock was holding up well against more powerful mental force. He wanted to rescue his fellow Vulcans so he was willing to push himself to the edge to remain in control and not jeopardize the mission.

Ael didn't think her own son would betray her. She didn't realize that he saw things differently than she did and was willing to cross her.

Lots of page space devoted to original characters! I think the Ensign Naraht stuff was my favorite. The idea of an eager to please junior officer somewhat squares with what we know of the Horta as benevolent, gentle creatures. #TrekBookClub

First, I think it's interesting Diane Duane gave us an AI computer (Moria), years before Alexa was a thing.

I like them figuring out they can use the 4-D chess board as a short -distance transporter device.

29. Tafv’s attacking Romulans were defeated by the Enterprise crew thanks to key contributions from different characters such as Harb Tanzer, Nurse Chapel and Ensign Nahrat (the Horta). Which was your favorite part of this sequence?

She thought Vulcans hid behind logic because they were too weak to fight. The Intrepid crew proved that was incorrect. She was impressed with how their clarity of thought helped them in battle (reminded me of Shaxs' security team in "Empathological Fallacies." #TrekBookClub #StarTrekMyEnemyMyAlly

The Vulcans couldn’t “cope” with the warrior lifestyle. 🤣

Both the mindmeld with Spock and the sight of a hundred fighting Vulcans has exposed her education as propaganda. She is clearly the main character in this story. She arcs.

28. We hear more of Ael’s and the Romulans views about the Vulcans. How would you summarize her views toward the Vulcans? How did they change over the course of this story?

I don’t quite understand why Scotty “knows” Tafv is behind the attack, or why Kirk “should have seen it.” If anything, I thought that twist came out of nowhere and needed a little more set up. #TrekBookClub

I’m struck by McCoy here, siding with Spock, and making a tactical argument for not leaving the brain tissue behind. It rarely happened in the show, but I like McCoy and Spock being friendly rather than antagonistic. Duane does hardly any McCoy/Spock needling banter. #TrekBookClub

Nice work by Duane extrapolating from The Enterprise Incident where the commander whispers her name to Spock. Clearly names have significance, and Duane expands upon that. What an era this was, when so much was unknown about these characters. The galaxy was a blank canvas! #TrekBookClub

We could tell it was a struggle. It was interesting seeing him push his himself against the Romulan weapon. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekMyEnemyMyAlly
