This is one of my favorite ends to a chapter, mostly because Roderika cannot know the absolutely mess this action left Mary in after she turned around…

#HQPress #WriteSky #WritingPrompts #WritingCommunity

She held out the cloth over her shoulder and felt Mary take it before she dipped it into the water. A few drops hit the floor of the carriage when she wrung it out and began wiping down Reka's back. She had a gentle touch, different from Tala's when they bathed together. She didn't mind the difference though.
As Mary finished up, Reka reached for the other towel to dry herself when she noticed the last of her strawberries, sitting on the carriage seat in her napkin. She grabbed it along with the towel and was about to eat it when she realized Mary hadn't had any on her plate this morning. She draped the dry towel over her front and began to turn around. "Mary?"
"Yes, Princess?"
She was exhausted with the "Princess" nonsense. Instead of offering Mary the strawberry as intended, she stepped across space between them and pressed it gently but firmly to her lips.
Mary's face immediately matched the morsel poised on her mouth and let out a tiny squeak before Reka pushed on the fruit just enough to stop her speaking. "I know you have to call me 'Princess' in front of Father Jonah, but we talked about this yesterday. We are going to be friends, and my friends call me Reka. Can you please call me that when we're in private, at the very least?" Mary nod was the barest dropping of her head.
"Good. Now this is for you."
Mary parted her lips and accepted the piece of fruit. Once she had it between her teeth, Reka withdrew her hand and left her to finish it while she dressed.

Humming as he left Fate's space, Knowledge skimmed the book Fate had started for his next vessel. He was hoping for something a lot more exciting than what he had previously, but as written by Fate, this vessel's personality was going to be difficult for him to motivate. She had the perfect amount of curiosity and thirst for what he could give her, but her adventurous spirit was lacking. Turning the corner and spotting the amorphous shape in the color an old comrade, he suddenly had a spark of inspiration. “Deception! I have a job for you. How'd you like to make sure my next vessel is well primed to accept me?”

You're never gonna believe this but my #sundaysnips was a direct continuation lol. #dogwood3

She kicked the rolling stool over to his bedside and sat.
“Wesley,” she said. “Do you have any friends?”
He was so startled he stopped crying. “Do I—what?”
“Friends. People you hang out with for fun. So it’s not just you and the crows waiting for Owen to show up.”
    “Stephen…”
     “Not what I mean.”
“The guys at the barbershop… And the pub…”
     “Those are Stephen’s friends.”
      “You.”
     “No.”
     “I…”
“Anyway. Something to think about.” She stuck the mask over his mouth and nose and snapped the band over the back of his head, then turned the nozzle on the canister.
“Breathe in.” He inhaled. “Out.” He exhaled. “In.”
His gaze went to the middle distance and his body relaxed.

“She's a witch,” said Mary, “She needs a proper witch's funeral.”
“A witch's funeral is just leaving the body out in the open for the wildlife to eat?”
“No, of course not,” said Mary. “That would be disrespectful. It's not a witch's funeral unless there's another witch in attendance. If there's no witch, a good female friend will do. When I killed Gran, they just burned her up and put her in a metal jar and when mum got better … you've heard this haven't you? I shot mum too … anyway we went and threw the ashes all over the place. But there's no nutrition in ashes so …”
She sighed. “I always vowed that mum would have a true witch's funeral.”
“And that she'd have it sooner rather than later,” I said.
Mary burst out laughing and punched me playfully on the shoulder, “Don't be cheeky to your evil witch queen or I'll turn you into a frog or something.”

#SundaySnips (re)turn from SmokeWIP
#WritingCommunity #Writingprompts #Writesky #HQpress #lgbtqWriters

Excerpt from SmokeWIP, a sage Owen romance novel wip. Text as follows:

He didn't know how to puzzle that into his daydream or the bachelor party reality, so he just made an annoyed huff. "We just took a walk to smoke some weed. Don't make it weird."
"I'll try not to eyefuck you the rest of the night." Fingers gripped Matthew's jaw, held him unnecessarily for another kiss. "But if you don't want people to know, we shouldn't return together. I must look like I just got fucked senseless." A hand snuck down his front. "And you look like you need to be."
He couldn't stop the moan completely, but kept it brief. "Touching it
isn't helping."
He was forward, flirty in a way Matthew had never seen Billy. "Can't blame me for wanting to keep touching you. Could our weed walk take a little longer, you think?"
"Absolutely not." He didn't know where the line was between sneaking drugs and assignations, but he couldn't believe Billy's stupid cousin was horny enough to be cavalier about it.
"If you're sure." He sounded peaceful. "Then I'll just say thank you."
Winkingly, he added, "Owe you one."
"Go." When he was alone he slouched against the tree, fished in his pocket, dry-swallowed a pill, closed his eyes, breathed through his nose until all he could smell was spring.

#SundaySnips word of the week - Turn

Rourke vs airports

He should know by now to allow extra time when he travels...

He turned right out of the open doors of the airbridge onto the main concourse.
And froze.
The business ends of seven SIG Sauer MCX Carbines were pointing at him. A red beam of light flicked over his eyes, blinding him for a second, making him look down to get the damn thing out of his eyes.
Six more dots of light appeared on his chest.
Grouped over his heart.
Fuck.

Lots of things are turning in autumn, but for this snip from A Harvest of the Heart, it's Henry's hair! 😁

Art by: @/dariakonnova

“Well, if it isn’t my favorite witch,” Henry said. “You all right? That was quite a tumble.”
Felix blushed, straightened himself and his hat, and faced Henry. The farmer gazed at Felix with his soft hazel eyes crinkling as he smiled. Henry’s dark brown hair was turning salt and pepper at his temples, but his beard seemed to have taken on the distinguished shade in force. He was leaning across the stand, his strong, thick arms balanced against the wood.
“I’m fine!” Felix squeaked, brushing himself off.
“Good, good,” Henry said, his smile lopsided. Oh, this was not fair.
A drawing of a large man with dark brown hair that's graying at the temples and a gray beard. He's wearing shades of brown and tan. He's holding a brown chicken and smiling warmly

It seems someone isn't happy with her dad's just-a-friend/not-a-girlfriend.😬

From Philosopher Queens, my rock romance/drama serial and a mini-arc appropriately called "Autumn Transitions." (Which I'm way behind on since I'm trying something different & might need to pause to catch up.)

Wynne POV

The front door chimes. I put on my customer service smile and turn to greet—what is she doing here?
Katie’s face lights up as she waves excitedly at me. She signs, “Hello, Wynne.” She takes the time to finger spell my whole name and is getting decent at it. She must have been practicing quite a bit. “How is your day?”
I sign and say out loud in case she doesn't know the signs, “Busy. Also, just ‘WY’ for my name sign.” I always liked the way those two letters sign together and it’s an easier than fully spelling my name. I was so often in and out of the Deaf community as I transitioned that I was never really close enough to anyone to get a new name sign that stuck.
She cringes, shrinking down into her shoulders. “Oh, sorry. I hope that was not... I just was not sure if that was only for family... I mean...” She straightens back up and even wiggles a little squaring up her shoulders before signing, “Hello, WY. I want to take you and your father to lunch.”
She is being so sweet, maybe I have judged her too harshly. Although, honestly, no matter how sweet she is, that doesn’t change her age or Rachel’s influence. Those are my biggest concerns.

"Street turned to road, and road dribbled down to path, as the darkness deepened. Haunts grew rarer and more haggard beyond the city outskirts, staring with blank eyes into a world they couldn’t leave, not since death was broken."

Hey #SundaySnips!
I personally love fall so much. We are in my power season. Heres a little snip from Wedding WIP of Blake turning colors.

“Slip off your engagement ring dude.”
Blake bared his finger for the first time in over a decade, readying his hand for Cole’s claim.
Dorian grinned at him and held out his hand for the vintage band. Blake handed it over and Dorian slipped it into the front pocket of his suit jacket.
“I’ll keep this safe until you’re a married man.” Dorian joked, bumping elbows with Blake who had turned a crisp scarlet.
“I can’t believe it dude. Finally marrying the love of my life.”
“Why did you guys wait so long? Not that there was any rush or anything.”
“Honestly with band stuff, we just couldn't find time, but you're right, there was no rush. We are never apart.” Blake smiled.

#SundaySnips i love it when my boys are just hanging out...

4ALark: If you fell in love with someone and got married and lived with them for nine years and then found out they were on America’s Most Wanted, would you turn them in?
Coppertype: …Is this happening to you right now?
4ALark: Asking for a friend.
Coppertype: Am I American in this scenario? Or would I have to deal with extradition issues?
4ALark: THAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION???
Coppertype: Sorry, sorry. Don’t know what came over me. What I meant to ask was, how sexy is my felon husband, scale one to ten?
4ALark: Better. Hang on, let me check.
4ALark: Maybe a six?
Coppertype: How the hell were you checking that? Is he in the room with you?

#SundaySnips - TURN

From the STONES OF AYOR series I'm trying to write, based on the fantasy RPG video game from LEVEL UP.

Sammy (Luscoe) uses his skills at circumventing locks to get them into an old ruined temple.

Luscoe continued to turn pieces of the lock until a carved-out shape appeared in the centre of them, a shape that closely resembled a hand print. Hadley watched, fascinated, as Luscoe pressed his hand into the indentation, and the whole mechanism clicked forward, illuminating with blue magic before splitting the door open wide.
“Well,” Luscoe said, brushing off his hands with a satisfied nod, “it’s not the most high-security, but I guess it would stop anyone without an ounce of sense. Or hands.”

When Daryl awoke, Frye wasn't in the room, but he wasn't alone. An old woman, tall and thin, was standing in the doorway, looking at him. He thought for a moment he was dreaming, or hallucinating. The old woman spoke. “Who are you?”
Daryl was saved from having to answer by the appearance of Frye in the doorway behind her, stark naked.
“Hello Gran. Don't turn round. I didn't hear you come in.”
Daryl pulled the sheets around him and found Frye's pants, hanging off the side of the bed. Frye's Gran gestured for him to throw them. She caught them deftly and held them behind her. Frye took them and put them on hurriedly. He went to the bedside and put on a table lamp. Daryl and she exchanged a look.
“So this is what you do when Hugo's away, entertain rent boys?”
“Sex worker,” said Daryl, making Frye wince.

This seemed appropriate, Alitzah is tied up and blindfolded and tries to turn towards the noise that is Cailo turning back into a human. #Sundaysnips #writingcommunity #hqpress

More yelling. More scared horses. Even some terrified sheep in the distance. Many steps pummeling the ground to her right, a few more to the left and that was where she felt the vibrations of trampling hooves. They must have a huge amount of cavalry. It was more a war group than a raiding party.

A gust of air pushed at her back, something shuffled inside the tent and Alitzah started to turn around to face what had entered. A futile attempt but she couldn’t help but try. There was no more movement but there were noises. Something cracked. And then another crack. Sharp, quick noises in rapid succession. As if someone was cracking their knuckles repeatedly. Something whined, long and droning, as if it were about to explode when it reached the right pitch and then, suddenly, it dropped. The noise became a voice; firm and awkwardly polite.

“Ten fingers, ten toes. Excellent. Alitzah, I’m going to untie you and then you will give me your cloak. After that, you can take off your blindfold.”

#SundaySnips | Turn
From my "Old Beast Yaoi" BatB retelling in which the Beast falls in love with the widowed merchant.
The Beast confesses that he's been mourning the loss of his first love, and he doesn't want to go through that same pain with Pascal.

"Never do I want to lose something as profound as the joy he bestowed unto me ever again. Yet here you are. You brought light back into my life. You've been healing my home, not just my mind or my heart. But all good things come to an end, do they not? Nothing is meant to last."

Pascal shook his head. "You never have to be without me. I never have a reason to leave, Beast. My old life doesn't miss my absence."

"But if I face the turmoil your presence has left within me, then I fear losing more than just my sense on humanity."

"I never meant to cause pain."

"No, Pascal." The Beast stood. "Never, Pascal. You don't bring me pain. The idea of losing you is what brings me pain. The very real possibility that one day, you will want to leave. And I will let you without question, even if my heart will turn to stone once again. I will never shackle you here."

Fire in the Sky, so 'ware spoilers at the link, and Viola and Mortimer's journey back to the safehouse is interrupted by an ominous-looking gathering

( saranadosfiction.com/2026/07/18/f... )

“Then stop chewing on it until we get to the house!” Viola shot back, and then immediately regretted it as several heads turned in their direction. *Oh that’s the last thing we bloody need. If someone realises who I am – and that’s more likely than I’d hope, given what happened at the Daggers – then we’re both done for.*

Though, now she came to think of it, her outburst hadn’t prompted nearly as much of a reaction as it might’ve done – and, looking more closely at the crowd on the other side of the street, she had a sudden gut-lurching feeling she knew why.

“Trouble,” she said, lowering her voice and jerking her head towards the knot of people at the heart of the group. “Don’t think it’s a fight, not yet, but might be about to turn into one.”

To Mortimer’s credit, he didn’t waste time asking stupid questions. “Break or stay?”

“None of our business, and the longer we stick around here the more likely someone is to make one or both of us.”

“Then why’re you asking in the first place?”

“Because they’re all human. *All* of them. Which means whoever’s at the centre of all that mess might not be.”

“…Shit.”

*Knew Amelia made the right choice with you.* “We go in, then?”

“We go in.”

Novice mage note to self: do not get distracted from the fight by the hot DPS

from The First Mate and the Dryad's Daughter 🦜 💚 🌴 currently first drafting

It might have been a mistake, turning to look, because now she was stuck watching Iona. If Daphne had thought her fast in sparring, now was another magnitude of speed entirely. Where Iona stepped, death followed, swift, merciful in the efficiency, but cruel in the glee she voiced. Daphne's blood thrummed now with a different energy. She raised her arms again to call the storm, and found it sluggish now. At most, she'd get another strike out of it. The clouds' rage was dwindling, or her mood was misaligned with it; she couldn't say truly what was different now, for her lack of training, but her chant took on an edge of begging.

Today's the day, whichever day that is

I wake up too early, about an hour before I need to, but I don’t bother trying to get back to sleep. My brain’s already switched on, already at work. It’s nearly impossible to turn it off for any length of time at the moment. I’m barely conscious ten seconds before it’s working through all the shit I need to do today.
I’ve got a shift at my other job soon. Yeah, with the agency being so low on clientele I’ve had to take the slightly less glamorous position of selling burritos out of a metal shack at the Auckland Uni quad. I’ll need to find some clean clothes for that. I’ve not been to the laundromat in too long and I’m running out of stuff to wear. Not sure if we have much I could make a breakfast out of either, haven’t been grocery shopping in a bit.
I need to check on Ruby. That’s the first thing. Always the first thing.
It’s as I scrape off the covers and sit up that I start to feel it. Like a mosquito’s hum as you’re trying to fall asleep. Something tiny, but impossible to ignore, rapidly all consuming.
Something’s wrong. I don’t know how I know that, but it is.
The look on Ruby’s face last night. She said she’d be fine, right? She told me that. She promised. I’ll walk down the hall, peek in through her door and find her still passed out as usual. I’ve been checking every morning for the last month and she’s always been there. There’s no reason today would be different.
But today is different. Every sensory organ I possess is screaming that.
