9 Oct 1715 (O.S.) // 10-gun sloop HMS Jamaica ran aground and was wrecked off Grand Cayman while being towed by a merchant sloop after a storm had left her badly damaged. The loss was blamed on the merchantman's pilot, who chose the wrong channel through which to tow her. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The Margate was able to catch up with the sloop, ordered her to stop and sent in a boat, but then began to drift and shortly afterwards ran aground on a reef. She began to flood and despite every effort being made could not be saved. She was abandoned with no loss of life. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

8 Oct 1944 // Minesweeper BYMS 2030 was sweeping at the mouth of the Seine when a mine exploded under her stern. She quickly began to settle and sank about 35 minutes later. Four of her crew were injured, but there were no fatalities and all were safely evacuated. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

8 Oct 1917 // HM Trawler Ben Heilem, an Aberdeen boat in naval service as a minesweeper, ran aground in a gale off Berwick on Tweed. Salvage attempts failed because of bad weather, and she was abandoned as a wreck. No lives were lost. #WW1 #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

8 Oct 1812 // 18-gun sloop HMS Avenger (formerly merchant vessel Thames) was wrecked with no loss of life in the Narrows at St John's Harbour, Newfoundland. A change in the wind headed her as she tried to make the harbour in bad weather, and she was driven on shore. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The Speedy, built in 1798 from unseasoned timber, was known to be leaky. Her commander, Lt Thomas Paxton, had expressed concerns about her seaworthiness but his superiors had brushed aside his protests, and he had been forced under threat of court martial to take her to sea. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

8 Oct 1800 // 18-gun brig sloop HMS Diligence struck an uncharted reef and was wrecked, with no loss of life, near Río Puercos on the north coast of Cuba.
