1/28 A Soviet cruise liner with 738 people aboard, a flat, calm afternoon in 1986, and a pilot who knew that water better than almost anyone alive. He steered her at 15 knots into a gap between a headland and a lighthouse rock. Mikhail Lermontov. A 🧵 #maritimehistory #maritimeincidents

This is a further encounter of Hayreddin Barbarossa and Andrea Doria:

Francis I of France entered into an alliance with the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent against Charles V, the Habsburg Emperor. Therefore, in 1543, Süleyman dispatched Barbarossa to France. Francis subsequently permitted the Ottoman fleet to winter at Toulon. For eight months, throughout the winter, the fleet remained in southern France and used Toulon as a base for operations against Habsburg territories in Spanish and Italian coasts. In 1543, a French-Ottoman forces breached Nice’s walls and captured parts of the city. But the arrival of an Imperial-Savoyard relief fleet under Andrea Doria forced the besiegers to withdraw before taking the citadel. Nice remained in Savoyard hands.

1/x Have you ever heard of a ship that raced another ship with her crew and passengers in a drunken stupor, hit a rock, and caused almost two decades of civil war? One man survived. “No ship that ever sailed brought England such disaster”. This is the story of the White Ship. #maritimehistory

B-17 bombers "intercepting" the Italian ocean liner SS Rex in May of 1938.

At the time, the US was still examining how aircraft could be used to defend against a major invasion fleet, a part of the wider debate about the effectiveness of aircraft vs. the Navy. Several large exercises had been carried out where aircraft defended the US coast against hypothetical enemy fleets. These exercises became something of a target to the media of the day who criticized spending excessive money on attacking imaginary fleets.

The United States Army Aircorps decided to capitalize on this criticism and use it to their advantage. If imaginary ships were bad, they would instead intercept an ocean liner. The Italian liner SS Rex was known to be traveling to the United States during the next round of exercises.

The event was planned in advance by the United States Army Aircorps. It's purpose was two-fold. First, it would serve as a highly public event. If successfuly executed, the event would be highly publicized. Not only would this silence critics, but it would also show the power and capabilities of aircraft, hopefully securing further support.

Secondly, the exercise would be a valuable lesson in locating an "enemy ship" at extreme distance with little information. Previously, aircraft were restricted to relatively short raids against ships that were within view of observers. Rex would be intercepted by guessing where she would be.

Three B-17s took off on the morning of May 12. The navigation of the aircraft fell to then 1st Lieutenant Curtis E. LeMay, a man that would later go on to have a major impact on bomber utilization in the United States Aircorps and later the United States Air Force. LeMay used a report that was transmitted from Rex the day before. Using information on typical routes used by ocean liners and their average speeds, LeMay estimated the probable location of Rex on the day of May 12.

Conditions on the flight were less than ideal. High winds affected the speed of the aircraft and higher sea states had slowed Rex.

Question for naval architects, historians and shipyardians: how did yards 100 years ago define the draught marked on their drawings? I've run into issues while drawing a couple of old ships in CAD.
