Alberta researchers investigate how zombie parasites take control of ant brains. Dicrocoelium is one of the best examples of parasitic mind control, say local researchers.

A close-up, ground-level photograph of a common frog resting amidst damp forest flora. The frog features moist, mottled brown and bronze skin with dark, irregular markings and prominent dark eyes. It sits low against a bed of damp peat, surrounded by vibrant spiky green mosses and miniature pine-like needle foliage, with tiny pine needles clinging to its back. The natural, soft lighting highlights the glistening, granular texture of its skin against the earthy woodland floor.

Australian pythons range from the anthill python at 60cm to the scrub python at over 6 metres.

None are venomous. All are excellent at getting into roof cavities.

Not all tiger snakes have stripes.

Every spring this one fact produces a wave of misidentifications, because colour is the least reliable thing about Australian snakes.

Here's a five-lined skink (Plestiodon fasciatus). These reptiles prefer moist, hardwood areas near permanent water sources (e.g. rivers, streams), and have been known to live for up to 6 years. #backyardnature #herpetology

The five-lined skink (Plestiodon fasciatus)...the grayish tail suggests that this is a male.

Australia has around 200 snake species. Roughly 100 are venomous and about 12 could actually kill you.

That gap between "venomous" and "dangerous" is where most of the fear lives.
