Seen while getting more coffee - a very fluffy, healthy looking red fox. Right after this photo, s/he gave a big stretch and yawned and wandered off.

At first glance, one might think this is a small toad...but it's either a gray treefrog (Dryophytes versicolor) or a Cope's gray treefrog (Dryophytes chrysoscelis). (They're virtually indistinguishable without close inspection.) #backyardnature #herpetology

I was asked about my close-up photography gear...

I use my iPhone camera either standalone, with a generic 30X loupe magnifier (with in/mm reticle), or with a Carson MicroFlip 100-250x pocket microscope. #backyardnature #entomology

"Ew, that's a bed bug!" Ah, but wait...

Under magnification, we see that it's actually an eastern bat bug (Cimex adjunctus), which does NOT prefer human hosts.

Check the hairs on the thorax and abdomen; if the hairs are longer than the eye is wide, it's a bat bug.

Say hello to these tiny garden wizards! ๐Ÿ„These delicate, pleated inkcaps magically appeared overnight in the mulch. Theyโ€™re nature's fleeting little recyclers, popping up after a good watering just to say hi before vanishing with the sun.

Here's a five-lined skink (Plestiodon fasciatus). These reptiles prefer moist, hardwood areas near permanent water sources (e.g. rivers, streams), and have been known to live for up to 6 years. #backyardnature #herpetology

Today's #backyardnature answers the question "Why is my rocktrumpet losing its leaves?" Mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae) are wax-coated pests that feed on plant sap; look for them on the underside of leaves, in branch/stem crevices, etc. There are 300+ species found in North America. #entomology

We found dozens of these in our covered sandbox - camel crickets (family Rhaphidophoridae). They're wingless, do not chirp, and will eat all sorts of things. Check out those long antennae... #backyardnature #entomology

This one can be tricky to identify, but I believe this #backyardnature visitor is the scarlet-winged lichen moth (Hypoprepia miniata). #entomology

Here's a beautiful monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). See those two black spots on the hindwing veins? Those "scent-scale patches" identify a male; they emit pheromones to attract females. #backyardnature #entomology
