This mucus has adhesive and cohesive properties, letting the tree frog stick to surfaces in a process called wet adhesion. This adaptation helps tree frogs defy gravity, even on wet tree leaves or bark.

Only 0.7% of #spiders remain compared to a 40 years baseline.

Spiders, like insects, evolved from arthropods. They walked and lived on land for ages before the first #amphibians or mammals or #dinosaurs (birds) evolved on land.

To sum up, the findings of this study support the notion by other researchers that we now live in the midst of an ecological crisis in which trophic webs are being eroded and degraded as a result of adverse, man-made environmental impacts [13,67,73,75,76]. If this disastrous trend cannot be halted or even reversed in the very near future, “entire ecosystems will collapse due to starvation”

There was the cutest tree frog climbing the garage door last night. Bigger than the spring peepers I usually see around here. 🥰 #frog #frogs #amphibians

ICB Throwback Axolotl Thursday

#Morphological, #Biochemical and #Immunohistochemical Studies on Heart Development in Cardiac Mutant #Axolotls, Ambystoma mexicanum

LARRY F. LEMANSKI

doi.org/10.1093/icb/...

#amphibians #science

In this paper I describe morphological, biochemical and immunofluorescence studies which compare the contractile proteins in normal and mutant hearts. In addition, morphological studies on anterior endoderm, an important heart inductor tissue in salamanders, are reviewed. Detailed electron microscopic studies show that normal heart myocytes contain numerous well-organized myofibrils. Although mutant heart cells contain a few myosin and actin filaments, there are no organized myofibrils. Instead, amorphous proteinaceous collections are prominent in the peripheral cytoplasm of the cell where myofibrils would be expected to first form. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis shows that actin is present in almost normal amounts in mutant hearts, myosin heavy chain is reduced and tropomyosin is virtually absent. #Immunofluorescence studies reveal that myosin, α-actinin and tropomyosin are located prominently in theorganized myofibrils of normal heart cells. In mutant hearts myosin is localized almost exclusively in the amorphous collections at the cell peripheries, α-actinin also is distributed mainly in the peripheral cell cytoplasm.

Painting of a large tree frog clinging to one brick of a wall, its head turned to look at the viewer. The brick wall is mostly pinkish and purple, which is reflected in the underbelly of the frog and contrasts against the yellow-green of its back.
