In 2018 we were in Centennial Park in Sydney when the Corellas came home to roost (and the bats were leaving). The Corellas were very boistrous, clumsily knocking each other off perches as they fought for somewhere to kip. I hope they're valid for #AwkwardAvian #BirdoftheDay considerations!

They are being viewed frm head on, and the bird in the middle has just taken off, with its wings outstretched and slightly ahead of it. The bird on the left is leaning away from it with its wings held slightly away from its body in alarm, its beak partly open as it screeches. The bird on the right is recoiling backwards, again with its beak open as it screeches. Each bird is all white, with a pale pink section around its eye that stretches above its beak , in which its nostrils are placed.

@helenbennett.bsky.social Well, I posted too hastily. I already posted this morning, but today's #BirdOfTheDay alt theme is #AwkwardAvian - any bird captured in a silly, clumsy or strange position, and I just now captured this blue jay doing a really odd and awkward wing dance.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

The photo shows a Ruby‑throated Hummingbird perched at the tip of a plant stem. The bird is small, with a long straight bill pointed upward, slightly open, gray‑white feathers on the chest, and darker feathers along the back and wings. Its tiny feet grip the stem just above a wilted orange flower. The stem has small droplets of water on it. The background is softly blurred in green tones, with round patches of light creating a gentle bokeh effect behind the hummingbird.

A małe Downy Woodpecker high up in a tree with pale brown branches, and somehow hanging on the end of a tiny branch where he had been poking around looking for bugs. The bird had a black and white striped head with a red patch on the back, a white front, and dark brown/black spotted back and wings with a large white patch on the middle of the back. I shot this photo in Aperture mode, which created a blurred background of green leaves and blue sky that appear as out-of-focus points of light known as bokeh balls. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.
