Micklegate Bar, York. The lowest part, including the gate arches, date from the 12th century, with some Roman masonry reused. The upper floors were created in 1350-75 to accommodate a portcullis and gate keeper.

The cheese making equipment formed a very small part of the finished illustration, in the ground floor end room shown here.
Research sketches of cheese making equipment from Yorkshire Dales farmhouses. I was working on a cutaway drawing at the time.

The rebus of Abbot John Darnton, Fountains Abbey. John is represented by the eagle of St John, which is holding a crozier. On the left are the remains of 'Dern', barely legible, while the eagle holds a tun or cask to represent 'ton'. The right hand scroll reads 1494.
Sketches as a reminder of a meeting of the Society of Architectural Illustrators. Brownsover Hall hotel, Rugby the venue; reputed birth place of 1st headmaster Rugby school near venue; coffee & KitKat + passengers on train.

FB memories: teaching recording historic buildings at St Anne's College, Uni of Oxford & a moated manor house. Hartland House 1937 in the college; lunchtime sketch of a medieval manor I was showing students how to measure; a lecture on photography.
Guthrum's Street, or rather Goodramgate, York. A fine group of late medieval timber framed buildings.
A walk on the Bar Walls, York.
Tower 23; tower 23 from the next one along, 24 & towers 24, 25 & 26 from tower 27, Robin Hood Tower. These are along the wall from Bootham Bar to Robin Tower (by Lord Mayor's Walk).
We recently visited Cragside, near Rothbury in Northumberland. Plenty to see & draw there, including the clocktower and former estate manager's house.
Micklegate Bar, York. The original archway of Micklegate Bar dates from around the early 12th century, with some Roman masonry reused. It's closed now so lorries don't get stuck there.
After the background I went on to make a mess of the house gable. Cue more eraser work & redraw, then onto suggesting the foreground brickwork. Hopefully I have passed the fretting stage with this drawing.
An early stage of the work on the drawing. At the time in 2020 my wife had recently had a major operation so was a bit distracted.

The wonky entrance to 8 Shambles, York for #ADoorableThursday. The doorway isn't quite as wonky as the rest of the structure.
Sometimes I get so absorbed in the subject I don't notice that the sketchbook is leaning over, like here at Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York.

Down by the harbour Alnmouth is the smallest museum in Northumberland. The Ferry Hut used to give shelter to the ferry-man who rowed passengers across the River Aln.

Thank you. It is easier to make out the bracket holding up the clock from the other direction. I think it was meant to look like a vine. The little figure on top is now preserved in the church while a replica is made.
Happy 9th birthday to this drawing of St Martin-le-Grand, Coney Street, York. The church is famous for its clock of 1778. It also has a Peace Garden, established in the ruins of the original church in 1961-2 after bomb damage in 1942.
The lower floor consists of an irregular shaped undercroft probably made as a store room. In the 16th century a fireplace added with a flue through the platform above. It's been used as a watch house, later a gaol & then a cowhouse.
