In #MathsToday #ALevelMaths I'm trialling a new HW approach with yr 12. HW is to be prepared to get 100% knowledge on a 15 minute test of the week's content. They do it, peer mark with exam mark schemes. I check and set detentions/interventions for those that do not get that point.

Complex numbers practice in L6 #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday.

Two questions: a quadratic equation and a pair of simultaneous equations where the coefficients are complex.

They are:

1. Solve (1-2i)z^2-(3+4i)z-9+13i=0

2. Solve (2+i)z+(4-i)w=21-i and (1+3i)z+(2+5i)w=12+18i

Watched BBC's new quiz "The Wisdom of the Crowds".

Big turn-offs for me:

1. The intro. The correct way to refer to him is "the *eugenicist* Francis Galton". Or, preferably, not at all.

2. The questions. No distinction as to which average was being used.

#MathsToday #ALevelMaths can anyone help with how you know which approach to take?

Following on from some recent discussions on here and as I am teaching it next week, please tell me what are your favourite desmos (or similar) activities for teaching combinations of transformations? #Alevelmaths

Argand diagrams in #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday, so I made a little completion table.

In #ALevelMaths today, my Year 13s gave this parametric equations problem from Underground Maths a go. I was pleasantly surprised with how well they got on with it. Lots of great discussions 😁 undergroundmathematics.org/chain-rule/p...

In #mathstoday yr 1 #alevelmaths did so well with Ab-surd! from underground maths. Didn’t really feel like I had to teach them much, they worked it all out themselves through some great discussions. Yr 2 did some textbook practice on functions, a simple lesson, but very much needed for this group.

Complex numbers in #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday, so we looked at this problem:

Explain why the absolute values of the real and imaginary parts of the square of a Gaussian integer give the legs of a Pythagorean triple.

Promotional graphic for an AMSP course. A group of students are seated around tables in a classroom, working with notebooks and study materials. The photograph is framed by curved AMSP brand-colour rings on the left side of the graphic. On the right, the text reads: “Bringing the Maths of Data Science and AI into the A Level Mathematics Classroom – Blended” and “Starts 14 October 2026”. The AMSP logo appears in the bottom-left corner, with decorative circular design elements across the light grey background.

In #MathsToday my #ALevelMaths Y2 students did some work on combined transformations of functions. We have the first assessment of the year coming up on Thursday and then starting Trigonometry next week!

Solid start to the year from both classes, expectations are high for this cohort.

Lovely related activity on Underground Maths. Really like the discussion of alternative methods, particularly using polynomials!
