What are some free (or inexpensive) Mac-based apps for creating #crossstitch and #embroidery designs?

I'm looking for one which allows me to add in the little symbols for easier guides.

The web-based Stitchmate seems good but I'm not keen on the fee.

I'm about to try Inkscape. Any thoughts?

Korea is next month's sewing project. Hopefully I can finish it by mid-October so I can then finish Spain and get the quilt done by Christmas.

I need idea suggestions, please. Half of me thinks this is ludicrously sexist, but in the 1950/60s, it would have been innocent of any impropriety. #embroidery transfer repeats the image four times - & it IS cute, leaving aside the political incorrectness. But what could I use it on? About 30 x 2"
