Today it is a Cat 5 hurricane.

110 mph gained in just 24 hours. Almost doubling the threshold of Extreme Rapid Intensification.

Fueling it: ocean warmth ~3-3.5°F above average, made up to 200x more likely by heat-trapping pollution.

Classic look of a very strong Hurricane as #POLO is. Multiple strong bands and a compact core with a strong/defined eye. This is a CAT. 5 storm right now, impacts to Mexico seems to be limited although the storm is realtively close to the coast.

#Polo #17E has achieved a rare feat - intensifying from a 45 kt tropical storm to a 140 kt Category 5 #hurricane in 24 hrs. There are indications that an eyewall replacement could occur, but Polo has some time to strengthen even further. Hopefully recon gets in before then.
