I just received my author copies!

I must say, I understand the idea of hardbacks… but like the cover of the paperback much more.

'two minutes then we leave the park' 🚨
'dinner's ready' while i'm deep in a spreadsheet 🚨
neither of us is being rude. we're being yanked mid-thought.
countdowns. bridges. every time.

hardest transition in your day?

'Two minutes then we leave the park.' My kid's body: this is a threat.'Dinner's ready.' My body, deep in a spreadsheet: this is also a threat. Neither of us is being rude. We're being yanked.WHY: Switching tasks costs Neurospicy brains real energy. A transition is a tiny grief, even from bad to good. WHAT HELPS: Countdown warnings, a 'bridge' activity, the same exit ritual every time. You're not stubborn. You're mid-sentence with your brain. Ask for the bridge. Give them the bridge.

my kid: meltdown over a shirt tag
me: has surgically removed the tag from every shirt i own
same nervous system. better scissors.
it's never about the tag. it's about being believed.

worst texture. go.

My kid: full meltdown over a shirt tag at 7:42 AM.Me: owns zero shirts with tags. Cut every one out with nail scissors. Same nervous system. Better scissors.WHY: Sensory input hits Neurospicy brains at 10x volume. A tag isn't 'a little scratchy.' It's an alarm that won't stop. WHAT HELPS: Tagless everything, seam-free socks, let them pick fabrics, never call it 'dramatic.'Your body isn't picky. It's precise. Trust what it tells you, and trust what theirs tells them.

"When uncredited knowledge is extracted from communities with less societal power and used for the benefit of those with more power, the opportunity gap deepens and the community experiences cumulative harm." #neurodiversity #justice #power

"From its inception, the #neurodiversity paradigm also functioned as a #moral rejection of a clinical and #research tradition that had pathologized, excluded, infantilized, and denied #neurodivergent people epistemic authority and self-determination."

Can unjustly produced research support just practice?

I think the assumptions we make seep into everything we do.

That is why I wrote this article. www.frontiersin.org/journals/psy...

my kid: 22 minutes on axolotls
me: 22 minutes on my sourdough starter to carla
if you get the info dump you are on the inside. that's the gift.

what's your 22-minute topic

My kid: 22 uninterrupted minutes on axolotls. Did not ask if I wanted to know. I now know.Me at work: 22 uninterrupted minutes on my sourdough starter. Carla did not ask. Carla now knows.WHY: Sharing a special interest is how Neurospicy brains say 'I trust you.' It's connection, not a monologue. WHAT HELPS: Listen for 5 minutes fully. Then gently name the time. Ask one real question. You don't talk too much. You love out loud. Find the people who want the whole 22 minutes.

Ah - dopamine hits. (Am stuck on a waiting list for an assessment re #Neurodiversity )

@just1voice.comSep 10, 2026, 2:03 PM

I need to tell you about the moment.

Not the diagnosis. Not the paperwork, not the waiting room, not the clinician using words I already knew because I'd done #RepublishedAutomatically #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity

Not every bond needs constant conversation.

For a lot of neurodivergent people, the deepest comfort is being able to just exist near someone. No performing, no filling the silence.

'5 more minutes'
- me, leaving the house (23 min)
- my kid, leaving the park (∞)
we don't feel time. we feel now and not-now. set the alarm before you start.

what's your real number when you say 5 minutes

Me: 'I'll be out in 5 minutes.' My partner in the car: 23 minutes, two podcasts, and a nap later. My kid: 'Five more minutes at the park!' Also not a number. Also not five. We don't feel time. We feel 'now' and 'not now.'WHY: Neurospicy brains have a different internal clock. Time isn't felt the same way, so it isn't tracked the same way. WHAT HELPS: Visual timers, alarms with names ('Shoes on'), leaving cues, transition warnings. You're not flaky. You're not disrespectful. Your time awareness is different. Build clocks into your world and stop apologizing for your brain.

Bluey Gets It.
Do You?

Next time you give someone instructions, offer them a choice of how to receive it — written, verbal, or visual. Takes five seconds. Changes everything for some people.
