It was really a weird thing, to draw aether not from you but from the stars above, enhancing your magic with divination cards… Not something she was used to. When you wielded a blade, you just had to carry it and move. It was… natural. Instinctive.

She strikes at the dummy, meets resistance, and just pushes harder. It's not going to go any deeper, she should just pull the knife out and try again. She's going to hurt herself.

Her hand slips forward towards the blade. Fortunately, she lets go and steps back before she gets cut.

"These aren't weapons of strength, you aren't going to beat armour or bone."

Thancred sits on a nearby rock and watches as she tries to retrieve the knife. Wherever it's stuck, it won't budge. She yanks on the handle and her hand slips again. This time she falls back onto the ground, utterly dejected, like she might cry. Thancred sighs, pushing himself off the rock and walking to the dummy. He wiggles the knife up and down until it becomes loose and he manages to pull it out easily. Without a word, he drops the knife on the ground in front of the girl and resumes his watch from the rock.

Story Snippet:

"Jehantel, please! No one else remains who can train me in more of the bow but you. I have fought even the mighty Titan and brought him low, yet I know it is still not enough. I know even greater foes wait ahead, and so I beg of you. I do not ask you to take up the bow again, only to train me!"

She looks down away from him as she delivers her final plea. "…Please… I don't know that I will survive without it."

Jehantel looks over the young woman before him again. She does clearly have the makings of an archer, and he has the eye to tell, she makes a fine one. But, more importantly, he believes he may see the makings of something else in her… "Very well. There is a moogle named Pukno Poki east of here. I would have you present yourself to him…"

"Those are some impressive muscles, Second Promise."

Koana looked around for the source of the voice. A Tonawawtan man knelt by the end of the tracks, a hammer in one hand and the other resting on the thigh of the leg that was bent out in front of him. His skin was a deep ochre, and brown eyes fixed on Koana from under his mop of dark hair. The expression on his face suggested he had been leering at Koana's abdomen while it had been exposed.

The Second Promise compulsively pushed his glasses up on his nose, looking down as he spoke.

"Father has trained us each in the ways of combat. I would not live up to his legacy otherwise," he said, attempting a dismissal.

"So you've brains and brawn, an attractive combination." The Tonawawtan man stood up as he spoke, coming over to stand in front of Koana. He was a full head taller, leaving Koana to stare at the curls of hair on the man's muscular chest where it was exposed by his open shirt.

Koana swallowed, his mouth suddenly dry.

With Minfilia's leave, Amaris is content to try and be productive while waiting for her next steps in the investigation of stolen crystals in eastern Thanalan. She turns the handle of her axe in her hands, the feeling still foreign to her. It appears that that feeling may be shared based on the sight she catches from the corner of her eyes.

In the mid-morning quiet, Aulie and Arenvald are sparring as A'aba calls out every incorrect move that Arenvald makes. Frustrated as Arenvald appears, she notices that his steps gradually grow better after each encouraging note. They don't compare to Aulie's graceful yet vicious movements, but his ability to dodge is there.

"Oi, Amaris!" A'aba calls out to her. "You're just gonna' watch?" He asks, his hand coming up to gesture at her axe. Amaris slides around the makeshift sparring area and finds a spot next to him.

"I don't know if I'm quite up to taking on someone as strong as you and Aulie." She is honest, smiling as she watches Arenvald almost get a hit on Aulie.

A'aba laughs before clasping her on the shoulder. "That is what training is for, kid." He notes, giving a nod to Aulie to give him the floor. "Come on, just one round." He insists.

"What? I couldn't..." She replies, her gaze looking around for anything else to be preoccupied with.

He doesn't budge, a serious look on his face as Amaris' brow furrows.

"Where is your weapon?" She asks and he laughs again.

"Don't need one. Never have, I've got these." He flashes his battered fists at her. "I can avoid any swing you'll make with that axe of yours, if that is what you're worried about."

She sucks in a deep breath before tightening her fists around her axe. "And if I do hurt you?"

A'aba smiles at her, warm. "Then I'll be impressed." He says simply before settling in a fighting stance. "In fact, that's your goal. Take the flat of your axe and knock me on my arse."

Amaris stiffens at the idea and Aulie laughs into her water-skin. "He isn't going to break, you know? Neither will you." Aulie says, pushing Amaris forward towards him.

She is hesitant but takes another deep breath. "Okay...I'Il try." Amaris says, her tone unsure.

Arenvald, still slumped over, attempts to cheer her on between heavy breaths. The words jumble together but the sight of his thumb sticking up at her is enough to break her nerves.

She narrows her eyes at A'aba and he does the same in return. This isn't her preferred way to spend an afternoon, but she has to be willing to try lest she be the one knocked on her arse.

B'alith fidgeted with the hem of his tunic as he watched his father coax the flames to life again, studying the way he performed a seemingly mundane chore with a newfound interest. The elder Miqo'te had claimed a knack for thaumaturgy, a proclamation utterly at odds with B'alith's understanding of the Boar tribe's current Nunh as a man more skilled with his body than his mind. B'jinh Nunh was hardly a fool—he would not hold the position he did if he lacked the necessary acuity with numbers which made him such a shrewd negotiator—but B'alith had a difficult time imagining those heavily-muscled arms and scarred hands performing the more delicate gestures he assumed were required of mages. One way or another, he would find out soon, and he did not want to wait a single moment longer.
