Day 22: Train
Choo-Choo! The Doomtrain's ready for Round 2!

T|1,085 words|Dawntrail (7.4) and Shadowbringers (The Sorrow of Werlyt) spoilers. Sequel to my Day 4 entry.

Excerpt from the Final Fantasy XIV fanfiction "King of the Rails (Extreme)" by EscaFox.

Deep with the tunnels something stirred with the grinding of metal and something unsettlingly more organic. The Doomtrain had been battered and robbed of much of its fuel in its last fight with the squishies, but not completely destroyed. Slowly, patiently, it had started to rebuild, using its telekinetic powers and remaining turret drones to drag scrap metal and old equipment from about its lair towards its broken body. There was a moment where it considered returning to its original form, to take to the rails again as were its familiar hunting grounds, but something within the siege engine desired more. In the last skirmish it had grown aetherial limbs to aid it and that had nearly been enough to win.

While squishies were very small and puny, they were also fast and clever. And so, as the mechanical monstrosity repaired and rebuilt itself, a new shape began to take form and for the first time in years its ghoulish face twisted into a smile.

One more week of #FFXIVWrite2026 left. I've reached that point in #FFXIVWrite that happens every year for the last six years. The point where I can look back on my first two or three stories with fresh eyes and wonder at how far I've come.

I'll miss this event when it's over, as I always do.
