Another quote from this 👆article:
"I'm not against cyclists. I'm not against bike paths or walking paths." - Cllr McLean

But his motion is against cycle tracks or bike lanes on streets, and in turn that is an action against cyclists. 🤷‍♂️

"If you were to completely cancel and refund all of the money spent on bike lanes, even in the last 10 years in the city of Calgary, you wouldn't even barely be able to afford just one single interchange that's built in the suburbs," -Mayor Farkas @jeromyyyc.bsky.social

Come to Cranksgiving next Saturday.

Had the most respectful conversation with a driver after I pointed out he blew through a red light and had a near miss with a scooter. He’d never seen the light or the other road user and was very apologetic and thankful. We both had a better day ❤️

Still a couple hours (save some energy, could be a good sunset). Yes @tinybeaches.bsky.social I got your obligatory counter shot, but I always get it when the LED flickers 😂 #yycbike

Apologies to the rider on the fancy carbon bike stuck behind my fat ass on the pathway by Edworthy. You went by so fast I didn't have a chance to mention the bylaw officer with a radar gun just ahead.

But you guys got to chat, so I guess it all worked out. 😁 #yycbike

If we really cared about creating safe streets, while also preventing wasting City money building things the UCP will rip out, a better approach would be to propose lowering speed limits to 30km/h on all streets designated for bicycle investment like 26 Ave SW.

When the UCP threatens to remove safe on-street bicycle infrastructure, it feels pragmatic to stop spending money on something that will be thrown away.

Proposing more off-street pathways instead, means areas like Ward 8 that used up their right of ways for cars will get nothing.

Map of off-street pathways in Ward 8 drawn in red showing very little coverage. Much of it is disconnected. Apple Maps street view of 26 Ave SW showing painted bike lanes. This street has a project underway to convert this to safe separated pathways.

Take 26 Ave SW In Ward 8 for example (drawn in green). An on-street pathway creates a great connection to many homes allowing people to travel to and from the neighborhood by bicycle.

If off-street construction was possible, that would be great, but it doesn’t exist.🤷‍♂️

When someone from an area with great off-street pathways proposes stopping on-street pathway construction, what they’re really saying is:

We don’t want you to have the same thing we have, and we don’t want it b/c we feel it’ll slow us down when we drive through your neighborhood.

Zooming in on the inner city, off-street pathways are limited to the along the rivers where green space exists. This leaves vast areas with no off-street pathways, meaning the only way to provide safe pathways is to use the street space to create safe bicycle infrastructure.
#yyc #yycBike #Calgary

Off-street pathways marked with red lines showing pathways limited primarily to space along the rivers. There is no network of pathways reaching into the neighborhoods.
@tinybeaches.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 3:18 PM

Zooming in on the off-street pathways in the deep south, you see a connected off-street pathway network. Every home is a short distance from a pathway and you can reach other destinations reasonably well.

Calgary has an amazing off-street pathway system with over 1,000km. So when someone proposes to stop building on-street pathways for bicycling and leave that space for cars, it seems doable. Maybe even reasonable… until you take a closer look.

Ward 13 off-street pathway map on left, Ward 7 & 8 map on right.

Can you spot the difference when a neighborhood has been purpose built to have an off-street pathway network throughout the community?

You have a network that puts every home in close distance to the pathway.
