On the Greek island of Mykonos, botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort witnessed a vampire panic in 1701 involving a dead man blamed for nighttime disturbances. Villagers eventually burned the corpse. An Enlightenment-era scientist accidentally walked into a vampire story. #WyrdWednesday

In the tale of Peredur, the Mabinogion's version of the Perceval myth, there is an interesting episode that is quite particular to this Welsh telling of the story.
When Peredur arrives at the Hall of the Sons of the King of Suffering, he finds only women present.

marionettes in matrimony
red threads tied
under the eyes of the living
and across the netherworld
the families unite
with offerings and blessings
bonds laid to rest
carolled inside a bonfire
their souls
released into another life

Prayer at a ghost marriage ceremony of two deceased adults conducted by both their respective families in China

Prayer at a chinese ghost marriage ceremony:
"So and so, I hereby inform you: You died at young age and thus did not realise the great principle of marriage. You sleep alone in the dark world and lack the intimacy of man and woman. Just as living people long for companionship, the dead fear loneliness as well. Unexpectedly, so and so's family had a daughter who just passed away like an autumn leaf. We sent a betrothal for you so your souls might meet. We selected this auspicious day for the rite of your union. We also set out an offering next to your shrine tablet, furnished with all kinds of food. Please send your spirit down to the banquet
and eat the meal.

Here’s the shieldmaiden, Hervor, extorting a cursed sword from her dead dad (who she woke up for this very purpose) so that she may then go pillage and plunder with it. Courtesy of Constantin Hansen in 1849 for Henrik Hertz’s book about Tyrfing.

The Serbian vampire Petar Blagojević became the subject of an official 1725 report after villagers claimed he returned from death and attacked them. When his body was exhumed, observers interpreted its condition as proof of vampirism and burned it. #WyrdWednesday

Poe knew the border of death was shadowy at best.

Across Southern pine barrens & red clay crossroads, the unquiet dead linger as "restless walkers" - flesh & bone finishing old chores until forced to cross running water. Some never truly sleep.

A composite southern gothic image of a rural red dirt crossroads bordered by dense green pine woods. Standing in the center of the dusty lane is a pale, ghostly woman in a long flowing vintage gown with dark hair.

In August 2025, several villages in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, held Ma'nene, a ritual of exhuming the bodies of loved ones from burial chambers, care for them, and clean them. It showcases love and connection beyond realms, a less grim attitude toward death. #WyrdWednesday

It's a common in trope in #fairy lore that a man mysteriously vanishes and then returns centuries later. He has spent the time in the land of the #fairies but it seems just a few hours to him. Returning to the mortal world, he soon crumbles into the dust of the dead.

“I wish the wind may never cease,
Nor fishes in the flood,
Till my three sons come hame to me,
In earthly flesh and blood”

—in “The Wife of Usher’s Well”, a #ballad first collected in Walter Scott’s 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 (1802), a woman is visited by her three dead sons
#WyrdWednesday

There lived a wife at Usher’s Well,
And a wealthy wife was she;
She had three stout and stalwart sons,
And sent them o’er the sea.

They hadna been a week from her,
A week but barely ane,
Whan word came to the carline wife
That her three sons were gane.They hadna been a week from her,
A week but barely three,
Whan word came to the carlin wife
That her sons she’d never see.

—“I wish the wind may never cease,
Nor fishes in the flood,
Till my three sons come hame to me,
In earthly flesh and blood.”—

It fell about the Martinmas,
When nights are lang and mirk,
The carline wife’s three sons came hame,
And their hats were o’ the birk.

It neither grew in syke nor ditch,
Nor yet in ony sheugh;
But at the gates o’ Paradise,
That birk grew fair eneugh.—“Blow up the fire, my maidens,
Bring water from the well:
For a’ my house shall feast this night,
Since my three sons are well.”—

And she has made to them a bed,
She’s made it large and wide;
And she’s ta’en her mantle her about,
Sat down at the bed-side.

Up then crew the red red cock,
And up and crew the gray;
The eldest to the youngest said,
—“’Tis time we were away.”—

The cock he hadna craw’d but once,
And clapp’d his wings at a’,
When the youngest to the eldest said,
—“Brother, we must awa.“The cock doth craw, the day doth daw,
The channerin’ worm doth chide;
Gin we be miss’d out o’ our place,
A sair pain we maun bide.

“Fare ye weel, my mother dear!
Fareweel to barn and byre!
And fare ye weel, the bonny lass
That kindles my mother’s fire!”—

In Eyrbyggja saga, Thorolf Twist-Foot becomes dangerous after death. His corpse reportedly grows so heavy it can barely be moved, then later leaves its grave and terrorizes the countryside. Eventually his body is dug up and burned. Some neighbors require extreme measures. #WyrdWednesday

In one of the starkest Child ballads a mother's lamentations
summon her dead sons home. But the reunion is with revenants & terrestrial time is short: ‘The cock doth craw, the day doth daw, The channerin’ worm doth chide; Gin we be miss’d out o’ our place, A sair pain we maun bide.’ #WyrdWednesday

To paraphrase: Before the cockerel crows at daybreak, the grave worms scold the revenants to return, not to their former life but to the tomb. If they remain above ground or accept any mortal foodstuff the punishment will be bleak. In this illustration, an elderly woman looks up imploring at three spectral images who are turning to leave. The viewer can see the night sky through the window and a candle burns as precious time passes.
'The Wife of Usher's Well' forms part of the Child collection, 305 traditional ballads anthologised by F.J. Child and published in 1860 🎨 Henry Matthew Brock's lithograph in 'A Book of Old Ballads' Ed. Beverley Nichols (1934).
