Learning about bristlemouths this week for #SundayFishSketch

A pen and ink drawing of a bristlemouth fish, with black background and heavy black shadows, blue red and green crosshatching, and a wide open jaw reminiscent of a xenomorph

This is a mene. They’ve looked pretty much the same for most of the Cenozoic. Some might call that morphologically boring. Others might find the stasis interesting.

I usually carve a paleo and modern version of each fish. In this case, I think one linocut will suffice.

Half carved linocut moon fish.

Red River pupfish (Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis) in #watercolor and ink for #SciArtSeptember 20 / #SundayFishSketch “Meander.” These little fish occur in the meandering, sandy-bottomed streams in the upper Red River basin of western Oklahoma and Northwest Texas, particularly in harsh environments.

Day 20 - #meander

The Slough Darter (Etheostoma gracile)

I thought back to my aquatic ecology courses and finding this species in the slow water of small river bends (meanders) in SE Kansas.

Watercolor + colored pencil.

Watercolor painting of a small slender darter (fish). Side view facing left. A male in breeding colors. Yellow-brown with green bars along the sides. Dorsal fin has deep blue topped with orange-red between the fin rays.

#SundayFishSketch Oh look, an internal scream found embodied form as a scribble-fish! 👀

Still experimenting with composition for a piece on ribbon eels (maybe, should be fun, let's see!) 🐡 #fishArt #art #wildlift #natureArt

A line art hand-drawn digital sketch of a ribbon eel, its long ribbon-like body unraveling as its head swims forward with eyes and mouth wide open as if in an eternal scream. Drawn by the artist Dhiyanah Hassan.

#SciArtSeptember #SundayFishSketch Day 20 is Meander, which made me think of the meandering creeks and streams I grew up mucking about in. So here are some of the fishy contents of those streams! This is the most time I’ve ever spent on a piece of art or done a background and my neck hurts #SciArt

Digital art drawing of an underwater scene in a creek. At the top, the sunlight is playing off the water and the bottom is a mix of gravel and various sizes rocks. There are four fish: a green sunfish, a common shiner, a fathead minnow, and a creak chub. The minnows are greens and browns and gold but the sunfish is very ostentatious with a bright orange belly and green topside. There are labels beside each fish to indicate what they are.

It's not a worm, it's not a snake. It has no eyes, no pigment, no fins. For #SundayFishSketch x Day 20 of #SciArtSeptember #Meander here is Rakthamichthys, a swamp eel genus adapted to live in aquifers, wet soil, and other underground habitats in India. What a meandering evolutionary journey! 🦑🐡🧪

Continuing our #Sundayfishsketch and #sciartseptember collab with @lizlagomorph.bsky.social for this month’s #fishytheme, we are looking for “meandering” fishes for this Sunday!! Whether it be by a slow meander via frogfish or a glide by a ratfish, plenty of species to choose from! #sciart

Female Coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) have returned to the #Salmon River on the #Oregon coast where I am visiting. Thought she would be appropriate for today's #SundayFishSketch. Hoping to participate more as we turn to autumn. #fish #illustration

A pen and marker drawing of a chunky fish that is varying shades of green, lighter in top and darker on bottom, with splashes of red along its middle.

This #sundayfishsketch is inspired by images my good friend and fellow fish biologist Kyle Grundy took! The blotchside logperch have evolved conical snouts and strong skulls linked to their mutualistic/parasitic relationship with native (and endangered!) freshwater mussels #scicomm #sciart

An ink drawing of a blotchside logperch (Percina burtoni) sits on a sandy river bottom with several rocks that have hornleaf riverweed (Podostemum ceratophyllum) growing on them.

Saw a beautiful longnose gar at the New England Aquarium yesterday #SundayFishSketch #sciart

a pen drawing of a longnosed gar, a long fish with a long skinny nose, done in blues, red, and greens. the fish is outlined in contours of green and blue

Not actually a sketch this time: my wife painted me a cichlid plate with the Lake Malawi endemic electric yellow cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus). 🐟 #SundayFishSketch

Rectangular shining glazed plate with a yellow cichlid on a blue background.

Another #SundayFishSketch #SciArtSeptember crossover! Diamondfish is just one of this guy’s common names, but it definitely suits him!

Colored pencil and ink drawing of a diamondfish, one of several common names for this cutie. It’s unsurprisingly roughly diamond shaped with two black stripes on the eye and pectoral fin against a silver body color. The dorsal and causal fins are bright yellow.
