For #MolluscMonday & #LaborDay, a knobbed whelk (Busycon carica) that buried itself during low tide on a Jekyll Island (GA) beach, its formerly fluidized wake marked by dwarf surf clams (Mulinia lateralis) that burrowed into the still-saturated sand.

Yellow-gray and mostly smooth sandy surface with a raised triangular patch to the left marking a live buried whelk, its lowermost end poking out. To the right are nearly a hundred almond-shaped bumps on the surface from dwarf surf clams that burrowed into the fluidized wake of the whelk.

#MolluscMonday The oldest antique I could find at the brocante in Bors, Charente, was this ammonite, probably Macrocephalites from the Middle Jurassic (Callovian), and hence more than 160 million years older than anything else in the store.

Elberry Cove #molluscs: gastropods (so called as they're stomachs on feet, not due to their tastiness to humans), Lined Top #Snail (Phorcus lineatus) & Black-footed Limpet (Patella depressa) plus 2 bivalves, Rough Cockle (Acanthocardia tuberculata) & #invasivespecies Pacific Oyster. #Molluscmonday

Contrasting coloration and feeding strategies in sacoglossans, sap-sucking slugs! Thuridilla hopei with diverse aposematic colour pattern feeds on algal sap, but Elysia timida retains functional plastids from the algae, surviving for 3 weeks with #kleptoplastids. #MolluscMonday

Sentinel of the Sea – This young pelagic snail, not bigger than the eye of a needle has a thin, calcified shell. Increasing [CO2] in the sea prevents formation of their shell; as sentinel species, thecosomate pteropods show us the level of #ocean_acidification. #MolluscMonday

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? Not for chitons! Their radula contains magnetite, the hardest material in living organisms. Their image forming eyes on the back of the shell contain aragonite lens, while other animals use organic lens. N-Adriatic Sea, #MolluscMonday

Bobtail squid (Sepiola rondeleti), a common inhabitant in this shallow artificial lagoon in winter and spring. Istria, Adriatic Sea. First #MolluscMonday in 2019. #Invertebrates

A young Creseis acicula, common pteropod in the coastal #plankton of the north Adriatic Sea creates ciliary currents for feeding, but this one rather looks like playing (hoop rolling?) with the diatom fragments. #MolluscMonday
