Until recently, I'd never given a second thought to the origins of the name Bath Street in central Glasgow. I think I'd always just assumed it was named after the city in England, but, this plaque on its corner with Renfield Street reveals its true origins.

This meant they didn't have to first step down into the street, which would have been covered with, amongst other things, horse manure.

I've been on the look out for an example of one of these in Glasgow for a while now, and I finally found one! What am I talking about? I'm talking about the large stone in the foreground of this shot of Kirklee Terrace in the city's West End.

The two statues are of the Hutcheson brothers, merchants who established the hospital in the 17th century. The statues also date from the 17th century and are believed to be the oldest public statues in the city.

The former Hutcheson's Hospital on Ingram Street in Glasgow. Designed by David Hamilton and built between 1802 and 1805, this replaced an earlier hospital dating from on Trongate. It provided a hospital for the elderly and a school for the poor.

This old wall on the banks of the Clyde in the East End of Glasgow might not look like much, but it's got a great story behind it, and its one that still has an impact to this day.

The bank moved from this site in 1825, and it became known as the Old Ship Bank, name it retains to this day, long after the Ship Bank itself has disappeared. This happened in 1843 when it merged with the Union Bank, which would later become part of the Bank of Scotland.

Glasgow's first bank, it was founded by Andrew Buchanan of Drumpellier, after whom the city's Buchanan Street was named, and some of the other city's Tobacco Lords to bank the fortunes they made from the slave plantations of Virginia.

The Old Ship Bank Building on the corner of Saltmarket and Bridgegate in Glasgow. Built in 1904, it's named after the Ship Bank, which first opened on this site in 1750.

However, there was no evidence that such comics had ever contributed to the events surrounding the Gorbals Vampire.

So what was going on? No one really knows for sure, but what we do know was there were no missing children and, unsurprsingly, no trace was ever found of a seven foot, iron-toothed vampire. Instead, it seems to have been a case of juvenile mass hysteria.

This sculpture is reputed to have come from the original Merchants' Guild Hall and Hospital on Bridgegate, which was built 1659 and demolished in 1817, leaving just the Merchants' Steeple still standing.

Lang apparently also introduced Glasgow to the then-revolutionary concept of paying after you'd eaten your meal, and not before as was the general rule at the time.

The Art Deco facade of what is now Max's Bar on Queen Street in Glasgow. However, for those of a certian age it will be instantly recognisable as the Rock Garden (or latterly RG), a legendary establishment of the 1980s and 1990s.

This raises the intriguing possibility that this is, in fact, the last surviving remnant of the early Victorian era Partick Gasworks.

As a result, while it was officially christened the Clyde Arc, for the last 20 years since, pretty much the only thing everyone has called it is the Squinty Bridge!

On this day in 2006, a new bridge opened in Glasgow. Designed by Halcrow Group and built by BAM Nuttall, it didn't go straight across the Clyde. Instead, it crossed at an angle to give enough clearance for boats to pass underneath.
