Young Man on the Rocks — a lovely 1907 oil sketch by Henry Scott Tuke. Intimate brushwork, luminous coastal palette and a candid sense of youth capture a quiet moment of summer light. See the study: buff.ly/RDR4DIu #ArtHistory

Ship-shape and seriously dazzling! 🚢 Edward Wadsworth painted this Liverpool drydock after supervising real dazzle camouflage on First World War merchant ships. The stripes weren’t there to hide vessels, but to baffle submarine commanders. Vorticism, meet the high seas! 🌊🎨 #ArtHistory #GeometricArt

Painting by Edward Wadsworth of a ship in drydock, its bow covered in bold dazzle camouflage of black, white and grey diagonal stripes above a rust red lower hull. Four tiny workers below hold long brushes up to the hull. Striped gasometers, chimneys and warehouses fill the background.

The Child's Bath — Mary Cassatt, 1893
Art Institute of Chicago

“The water itself is a few strokes of grey and white, and through it, faintly, you can make out the small foot, held.”

Today’s story: “The foot in the basin”

"Sight is one of the most rapid actions we can perform. In an instant we see an infinite number of forms, still we only take in thoroughly one object at a time."

Shore House by George Bellows, 1911, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Realism #AmericanRealism

The turbulent surface of the ocean consumes the left quadrant of the composition. A pale blue house, stark against the ochre earth, anchors the right foreground. Jagged waves crest and crash against the cliff face. Adjacent to the dwelling, a solitary utility pole pierces the sky.

Thick impasto builds the frothing sea foam, lending it a visceral materiality. The rapid application of paint across the landscape imbues the scene with an urgent energy. This dynamic handling of form suggests a world where nature's power asserts itself against human habitation. The house, small and isolated confronts an indifferent, vast expanse. This directness in representation echoes a burgeoning American realism, capturing the rugged spirit of coastal life. A palpable sense of exposure pervades the scene The muted tonalities of the sky press down, intensifying the drama of the water.

Shore House was created during a period of transition in American art, bridging the gap between Realism and Modernism. Bellows, while initially associated with the Ashcan School's gritty depictions of urban life, increasingly turned to landscapes and scenes of leisure. This work reflects the influence of European Modernism, particularly the emphasis on formal elements and expressive brushwork, but retains a distinctly American sensibility. It's part of the broader movement towards abstraction and a rejection of traditional academic painting.

October's theme: Japanese Ghost Stories
KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1760 – 1849), “The Ghost of Kohada Koheiji”, c. 1831.
This is another ghost print from Hokusai’s series “One Hundred Ghost Stories”.

This is another ghost print from Hokusai’s series “One Hundred Ghost Stories”. Kohada Koheiji was a mediocre Kabuki actor who could not get any good roles in Edō. He went on the rural circuit instead and specialized in playing ghost roles, which he excelled at because he was very unattractive and supposedly did not need to use much stage makeup! His unfaithful wife and her lover (a fellow actor) conspired to kill Kohada, which they accomplished by drowning him in a swamp. Kohada returned immediately as a restless ghost and haunted the couple relentlessly. Hokusai’s Kohada is singularly ugly, with bony hands, tufts of human hair on his skeletal head, and bloodshot eyes; he is still wearing the Buddhist prayer beads with which he was buried. He pulls aside the mosquito netting that covers the bed of his wife and her lover; I imagine they were not too pleased to see him in the middle of the night! Male ghosts are rare in Japanese ghost stories. Kohada’s story was supposedly based upon real life events that happened around the year 1700.
