This week on the blog I decide to start batch painting a Vandal army using models from Gripping Beast (RIP?). What’s painting 60 some models at once? Eh?

An important passage hitting on the centrality of the Justinianic Plague in these new debates about the "Fall" of Rome. A warning: some of these "debates" are overblown. I still recommend Sarris 2022 (n. 100) as the clearest-eyed assessment of the issues. #histmed #aDNA #LateAntiquity #MedievalSky

An extended quote from p. 13 (online preprint):
"Partly because of this challenge, the degree to which ecological events can explain major political and even religious changes is hotly debated.99 The Plague of Justinian is perhaps the most controversial of these events, provoking a slew of publications arguing over its overall impact.100 Discussions of long-term impact also extend to questions of climate. Tracing volcanic eruptions or fluctuations in temperature starts to impact our understand- ing of the sixth century in particular.101 While some of these attempts can contribute to the search for the ‘Fall’, there are recent contributions that clearly misunderstand the interplay between sciences and historical hermeneutics.102 Discussion of the impact of climate and nature has entered a problematic phase where historians are often deliberately left out of the discourse.103 Fortunately, there is already a theoretical discussion under way on how the dissonance between methods and discourses can be bridged and made productive.104 The ‘Fall’ then appears as a protracted event."
