Once the sword passed by her, Ashrah sprang forward, darting Datusha across the soldier’s torso and following with a— The earth shook; she lost her balance and her sword, and then the soldier slammed into her, pressing the hilt of the greatsword against her neck. Ashrah strained against the weight crushing the bones along her throat, the taste of alarun biting her tongue. Unable to aim, she rammed her fist against the general direction of the gash she had opened in the mortal’s stomach. The soldier squealed, arms going weak. Ashrah punched the injury again with more force and, wriggling her arm free, threw a fist at her enemy’s throat, causing her to drop the heavy weapon as she backed away, struggling for breath. Ignoring the ache in her neck, Ashrah retrieved Datusha, plunged it into the warrior’s gaping mouth, and dragged the blade out through bones and sinew and flesh. Slivers of teeth and bones and the sliced tongue jumped out of the hanging mandible, the two halves writhing on the floor alongside a chunk of her still-beating heart.

The night before, Jacqueline had started moving Mary’s bedroom to the first floor. Rebecca had refused to help, and Jacqueline had no one else to ask. When she tried to move her mother’s bed frame, her hand caught and twisted, sending white-hot pain through her arm. She’d hissed an expletive, and the taste of soap in her mouth from the last time she’d sworn in her mother’s house came rushing back as a memory she’d sooner forget. “You didn’t come to my room last night,” she chided. I had thought about it. And then thought about it some more, in detail the second time, and fell asleep picturing her flustered with her round cheeks reddened. I didn’t reply to her, but I could tell she was satisfied with the look I gave her by the way she grabbed my hand and bounced through the hall to a small bathroom. She pointed at where there was a towel neatly folded on the counter. On top of it was a toothbrush and a few other amenities. “Breck gave you stuff.” “Tell him thanks,” I muttered. I hated when people gave me things, even basic necessities. It made my skin crawl all over. Throwing her hands up in exasperation, she looked at me with pursed lips. “Why are you like this?” A laugh burst from my chest, caught off guard by the question. “Like what?” “Well, for A, you don’t talk enough.” She clicked her tongue as if I was a naughty child. “What should I talk about?” “Yourself. Me.” She gestured over herself. She did look cute in a pair of tight jeans, and a pale pink top that let her belly poke out a little. I wanted to grab her, to touch every inch. “I’m being kidnapped,” I pointed out She scoffed. “So? Am I not adorable?” “I—” “Y’know what? Don’t answer that.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder, peering at herself in the mirror with great relish. Pouting her lips, she studied every angle. “I already know what you think of me.” I met her eyes in the mirror, unable to keep a hint of a smile from my lips. “And what’s that?” She squeezed her eyes shut, wrinkling her nose with delight. “None of your business, Max.” And then she let out a little cackle before flouncing away, leaving me alone in the bathroom.
