Just had a week of photoshooting #fungi for my upcoming "Art in the Field: Drawing Fungi" book (publ spring 2027) with art director and photographer from David & Charles publishers.

Fascinating process, and so lucky that theres so much amazing fungus around!

Two young fly agaric mushrooms; the larger one is still new enough to be domed; snuggled up beside it is a smaller button, almost spherical. The mushrooms have a brilliant red cap, sprinkled with whitish lumps, or "warts", the remains of the universal veil. The stem is thick and pure white. The mushrooms are growing in an urban lawn; dried oak leaves come from a tree a few metres away.

Well it has been a great few days #shroomin! The highlights being... Ghosts, Hedgehogs & Jelly Babies (AKA respectively (Leccinum holopus, Hydnum repandum & Leotia lubrica). No the ghost isn't spooky, yes the Hedgehogs have spines, no the jelly babies aren't sweeties! #Fungi

A white, slightly greying mushroom growing in moss and leaf litter. This shroom, one of the boletes, has pores instead of gils.

Two rubbery jelly-like mushrooms with shiny dark brown caps and yellow stripes growing in grassy leaf litter.

A mushroom with a buffish pinkish undulating cap with spines beneath instead of gills. It has a white stipe and is glowing in moss.

A white and somewhat crumbled mushroom sticks a fat stalk up out of the leafy ground, raising a battered and somewhat chewed cap towards the sky. I kinda love how brutalized this one is.

A fungus photo a day: Hiking yesterday I glanced down and said “What the hell is that?!” Almost no fungi up, to see something big that I’ve never found before was very suprising! This is Sparassis radicata/western cauliflower mushroom. More photos ⬇️.
