Just had a week of photoshooting #fungi for my upcoming "Art in the Field: Drawing Fungi" book (publ spring 2027) with art director and photographer from David & Charles publishers.

Fascinating process, and so lucky that theres so much amazing fungus around!

Tidal Marsh at Low Tide
#TidalMarshArt #BotanicalIllustration #MidCenturyNaturalism #AIArt

An aerial view illustration of a coastal salt marsh ecosystem, depicted in a stylized cartographic style. The image shows a complex network of winding tidal channels and creeks rendered in muted blue-gray tones, weaving through various marsh habitats shown in earthy greens, olive, teal, and brown hues.

Labeled annotations border the image identifying distinct ecological zones: *Spartina alterniflora* (Smooth Cordgrass) in the upper left, *Salicornia virginica* along the left side, *Salicornia virginica* (Glasswort) in the lower left, a Main Channel at Low Tide along the bottom left, Labyrinthine Creeks at the bottom center, Exposed Mudflat Sediments on the right side, and *Juncus roemerianus* (Black Needlerush) in the lower right.

The composition captures the intricate, branching nature of tidal creek systems with organic, flowing forms reminiscent of topographic or scientific illustration. Cracked mudflat textures appear in the darker brown areas, while soft teal and sage greens represent the varying vegetation communities. The overall palette is naturalistic and restrained, with careful attention to the layered complexity of a living marsh landscape. The piece blends scientific documentation with artistic elegance, presented on a clean white background within a square format.

Just published a new real-time film of me doing a #botanicalillustration of a #nasturtium flower:

They're great subjects to illustrate, such glowering colours, such interesting structures, edible, and flowering late into autumn (in the UK). Give it a go? #sciart #noAIart

Pomegranate Cross-Section Scratchboard Etching
#ScratchboardArt #BotanicalIllustration #MonochromaticArt #AIArt

A dramatic black and white scratchboard or engraving-style illustration of a pomegranate broken open into multiple sections against a deep black background. The fruit is split apart to reveal dense clusters of rounded arils (seeds) packed tightly within the pale, membrane-divided interior. The crown-like calyx is visible at the top of each section. Intricate cross-hatching and fine white lines create rich tonal contrast, highlighting the smooth, glossy surfaces of the individual seeds and the fibrous white pith that separates them. Scattered loose seeds lie across the bottom of the composition, adding a sense of natural abundance and organic movement. The artwork demonstrates exceptional detail and craftsmanship, with the white linework glowing luminously against the stark black ground, giving the piece a striking, almost otherworldly quality reminiscent of classical botanical illustration.

A little raspberry study🍃

I drew this branch last season and somehow never shared it. So here it is at last! I always enjoy revisiting old sketchbook pages—they bring back memories of the plants and seasons that inspired them.🍓🍒
