28 Sept 1808 // 16-gun brig HMS Seaflower was captured by French frigate Manche off Sumatra after a chase that had begun at 10am on the previous day. When the frigate caught up at noon, the brig surrendered, having thrown all but two of her guns overboard during the chase. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The loss was blamed on the incompetence of the pilot, who had also run her ashore twice on the previous day. On the first occasion she had floated free and on the second she was hauled off, but her timbers had been weakened and the third grounding caused terminal damage. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

28 Sept 1799 // 14-gun schooner HMS Fox was driven onto a reef by a squall and wrecked in Saint George Sound, on the Gulf of Mexico coast of Florida. Her crew reached Dog Island where they managed to survive for over a month before rescue came, and no lives were lost. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Shots from her pursuer left most of the Falcon's sails and rigging in tatters. A heavy sea was running, and her lee ports were underwater making the guns on that side unusable. She could offer little resistance and when the privateer called on her to surrender she complied. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

28 Sept 1686 (O.S.) // 44-gun 4th-rate HMS Half Moon Prize, in ordinary at Chatham, was destroyed by a fire which apparently began when a candle was knocked over in the cook's cabin. The only casualty was the cook, who was rescued in an unconscious state but did not recover. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

As she surfaced and began to reverse, she came under fire from coastal batteries and ships in the harbour, after which she was reported missing.

In Memorium:
In the Second Book of Shmuel (Samuel), 22nd chapter, 5th through the 20th verses, translated from the original in Hebrew and published by the Koren Publishers of Jerusalem, Israel, 1982, can perhaps aptly describe the fate of the crew and all other U.S. submariners who died defending their county:

"When the waves of death compassed me / the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; / the bonds of She'ol encircled me; / the snares of death took me by surprise; / in my distress I called upon the Lord, / and cried to my G-D: / and he heard my voice out of his temple, / and my cry entered into his ears. / Then the earth shook and trembled; /the foundations of heaven moved / and shook because of his anger /...the heavy mass of waters, and thick clouds of the skies /... And the channels of the sea appeared, / the foundations of the world were laid bare, / at the rebuking of the Lord, at the blast at the breath of his nostrils. / He sent from above, he took me; / he drew me out of many waters; / he delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me; for they were too strong for me. / They surprised me in the day of my calamity: / but the Lord was my stay / He brought me forth also into a large place: / he delivered me because he delighted in me./"

I cannot read English and do not have the card, so I am unable to purchase it, but von Essen was the most capable captain of the Russo-Japanese War.
I have heard in passing that he was equally capable in the Baltic Sea, so this book is bound to be excellent.

Hard to believe it is over a year since the manuscript for my last book went to the publisher. I wrote a short piece about writing naval history, and the motivations for my last book in particular:

A small correction is necessary, it seems.
According to both their log-books, HMS Hood and HMS Repulse set sail 28 September 1923.

The Barbadoes grounded at 9:15pm. The night was spent in failed efforts to refloat the ship. She was abandoned, with the loss of one man, on the following day. The crew, and a large amount of money the ship was carrying, were collected two weeks later by other RN vessels. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory
