Bowl throwing session
.
I like throwing wide pieces on hydrobats, because I can come back after leaving them overnight and they pop off, uniformly dry more or less, ready to trim

I'm loving the cotton candy vibes on this bubble cup!

3 coats of Norse blue all over, and 2 coats of bougainvillea just around the top.

uk'ib depicting the Myth of the Snake Lady (ceramic drinking vessel, Late Classic Mayan, c. 650–800 CE (earthenware clay, mineral slip paint)
#ceramics #pottery #archeology #mythology #mayan #art

Three photographs showing different sides of a single ceramic drinking vessel (uk'ib) depicting the Myth of the Snake Lady, Late Classic Maya, c. 650–800 CE, earthenware clay with mineral slip paint. The vessel is a cylindrical cup of moderate height, slightly wider at the top than the base, with a broad band of deep red-orange slip at the rim and a dark band at the foot. The body is cream-coloured, painted in fine dark brown-black lines in the codex style characteristic of elite Late Classic Maya ceramics — fluid, precise draughtsmanship of considerable sophistication. The three photographs together show the full circumferential narrative.

Image 1 shows the central scene of the myth: a large feathered serpent with an elaborately scrolled, open-jawed head dominates the composition, its body coiling across the vessel surface. A human or supernatural figure — the Snake Lady herself or an associated deity — is shown emerging from or engaged with the serpent, her body contorted within its coils. A band of Maya glyphs runs along the upper register, likely naming the vessel, its owner, its contents, or the narrative depicted.Three photographs showing different sides of a single ceramic drinking vessel (uk'ib) depicting the Myth of the Snake Lady, Late Classic Maya, c. 650–800 CE, earthenware clay with mineral slip paint. Image 2 shows a continuation of the scene: a seated or crouching figure, elaborately dressed with headdress and body ornaments, interacts with large volute or cloud-scroll forms suggesting supernatural atmosphere or transformation. Additional glyphs appear at the upper left.Three photographs showing different sides of a single ceramic drinking vessel (uk'ib) depicting the Myth of the Snake Lady, Late Classic Maya, c. 650–800 CE, earthenware clay with mineral slip paint. Image 3 shows another section: a standing figure in profile, richly adorned with headdress feathers and a beaded collar, gestures or moves within the scene, the sinuous body of the serpent continuing around the vessel. Multiple columns of glyphs occupy the left side of this view, and the open jaws of a large serpent or zoomorphic creature are visible at the right edge. The overall narrative reads continuously around the vessel and would have been viewed as it was rotated in the hands of the drinker — likely consuming cacao — in a ritual or courtly context.

Admittedly, I probably didn't need to go this hard on a local business commission. However, they are really cool people and I kind of really wanted to use my drawing pad again and this gave me a good opportunity.

A reference sheet for different clay/glaze combinations for a ceramic mug. Lots of green glazes and a variety of clay colors.

She's blue!

I have such a fun time combining wheel throwing and hand building. This piece is pretty non-functional, although you could put some dried plants in it!

Not true kurinuki (刳り貫き) since I threw this on the wheel rather than carving from a solid block, but it's a nod to that start-thick, carve-away approach. The shape is organic with a wabi-sabi feel, a real departure from my usual calculated, symmetric work.

Another Strata piece: a fairness pitcher (公道杯), or pourer. Started with thick walls and a thick bottom, faceted away, then carved and textured until it reads like stone and cliff. Oxides and glaze layer the color. Really pleased with this one. 🧵 #pottery #ceramics #handmade #手作陶器

Well, it's cobbled together from materials we had on hand, but this is the enclosure we've built for our much-anticipated pit firing of our wild, local clays! What do you all think?
