October is #BlackHistoryMonth and today we’re looking at the extraordinary Professor Merze Tate, who attended The Society of Oxford Home-Students (now St Anne’s College) from 1932 to 1935.

Professor Merze Tate’s life is full of firsts, breaking racial and gender barriers in pursuit of education.

This Black History Month, we reflect on the courage and service of the African American soldiers who fought during the Second World War. Pictured is one of the recipients of the Medal of Honor: First Lieutenant John R. Fox.

You can read his story in 'Immortal Valor' by Rob Child.

Every October, the sector suddenly remembers. Then November arrives and it's quiet again.

Black creativity is 24/7, 365. The opportunities should be too.

#BlackHistoryMonth #BHMUK

A crowd of Black people stand on a city street looking up at a billboard that reads "WE'RE LISTENING. Black Voices Matter — this October (Back to normal in November …) T&Cs apply." One man walks away dismissively. An older woman with grey dreadlocks looks at the viewer with a wry smile. A satirical comment on Black History Month.

#BlackHistoryMonth is a good time to focus on the #Warburg's 'Image of the Black' archive. Begun in 1960s Paris in response to the US Civil Rights movement, this database of artefacts and materials is held in our Photographic Collection.
