The Gleaners — a powerful, iconic 1857 Millet painting of three French peasant women gleaning grain. A compassionate, unflinching study of rural labor and social inequality that influenced Realist and Impressionist artists. See it: buff.ly/tWLy497 #ArtHistory

From the 103rd floor of Sears Tower straight to the scariest portraits in town.
I went from Van Gogh's intense 1887 self-portrait right into Ivan Albright's rotting flesh "Picture of Dorian Gray" canvas from the film.

At the very front of this Annunciation, in the best seat in the house, sits a cucumber. And the painter kept doing it. Carlo Crivelli.

The record of this episode: his story begins with a Venetian court record of 1457.

Giorgio Vasari was more than an artist in Renaissance Italy; he was a pivotal curator, shaping how we see art history, especially his deep admiration for Leonardo da Vinci. #renaissance #arthistory

After the Rain by William Merritt Chase, 1913, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #AmericanImpressionism

The artwork features a vibrant city scene, with an emphasis on the effects of light and color that are characteristic of Impressionism. The foreground is dominated by reflections on water, which suggest a street or canal bathed in the diffuse glow of a recently departed storm. The surface of the water is rendered with an array of blues and greens interspersed with the golden and earthen hues echoed from the buildings above, creating a rich mosaic effect.

The viewer’s eye is invited upward to the buildings that crown the water’s edge. The architecture is suffused with a warm, yellow tone, perhaps the result of sunlight reclaiming its place in the sky. The darker windows and architectural details are sketched with a casual grace, sufficient to convey the impression of a populated and bustling urban space without delving into meticulous depiction. The softness of the brushwork imbues the scene with an atmospheric quality, a tranquil moment of respite as life resumes its rhythm after the cleansing of the rain.

This cityscape is a study in luminosity and atmosphere, capturing the transient nature of light as it interacts with the environment. Chase’s treatment of the subject matter is indicative of the Impressionist movement’s fascination with the immediacy of visual experience and the fleeting effects of natural light and color on each day’s unique look and feel of a city.

October's theme: Japanese Ghost Stories
SAWAKI SUUSHI (1707 – 1772), “Yūrei”, 1737. Fukuoka City Museum, Fukuoka, Japan.
Sawaki Suushi’s most famous work is the picture scroll known as “Hyakkai Zukan” (The Illustrated Volume of a Hundred Demons).
#arthistory #art #Japan #Ghosts

Sawaki Suushi’s most famous work is the picture scroll known as “Hyakkai Zukan” (The Illustrated Volume of a Hundred Demons). This work greatly influenced later generations of Japanese Yūrei-zu artists. The demons and ghosts portrayed were sourced from literature and folklore and given visual form by Suushi. His forms became the “norm” for ghosts in Japanese art: they are easily identified by long and uncombed hair, very pale complexions, jangly hands and by the garment they wear, the katabira, which is a white burial kimono. Suushi also created non-ghostly scenes but the Hyakkai Zukan is his masterpiece. His artistic style is marked by careful brushwork and soft colors. This particular yūrei is not a depiction of a specific ghost from a specific tale.

In 1602, Juan Sánchez Cotán treated humble food with the gravity of a religious relic. The unanswered question is whether this still life celebrates earthly abundance—or renounces it. What do you feel it asks you to value?
