After the Rain by William Merritt Chase, 1913, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #AmericanImpressionism

The artwork features a vibrant city scene, with an emphasis on the effects of light and color that are characteristic of Impressionism. The foreground is dominated by reflections on water, which suggest a street or canal bathed in the diffuse glow of a recently departed storm. The surface of the water is rendered with an array of blues and greens interspersed with the golden and earthen hues echoed from the buildings above, creating a rich mosaic effect.

The viewer’s eye is invited upward to the buildings that crown the water’s edge. The architecture is suffused with a warm, yellow tone, perhaps the result of sunlight reclaiming its place in the sky. The darker windows and architectural details are sketched with a casual grace, sufficient to convey the impression of a populated and bustling urban space without delving into meticulous depiction. The softness of the brushwork imbues the scene with an atmospheric quality, a tranquil moment of respite as life resumes its rhythm after the cleansing of the rain.

This cityscape is a study in luminosity and atmosphere, capturing the transient nature of light as it interacts with the environment. Chase’s treatment of the subject matter is indicative of the Impressionist movement’s fascination with the immediacy of visual experience and the fleeting effects of natural light and color on each day’s unique look and feel of a city.

Union Square by Childe Hassam, 1890-1893, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #AmericanImpressionism

The artwork illustrates a lively scene in Union Square with various elements of city life beautifully rendered. In the foreground, elegantly dressed individuals meander through the square, engaging in their daily activities. A horse-drawn carriage, intricately detailed, waits by the side, emphasizing the mode of transportation of the era. Central to the composition is a prominent red lamppost, which stands as a focal point with a flag fluttering above, infusing a sense of dynamism. The background is adorned with lush green trees and the architectural grandeur of surrounding buildings, depicted with soft, diffused light typical of the Impressionist style. Through the use of light and color, Hassam successfully conveys motion and the fleeting moments of everyday life, instilling the artwork with a palpable sense of immediacy and vibrancy.

El Jaleo. (The Ruckus). John Singer Sargent. 1882. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Boston, Massachusetts.
Sargent’s work of this Spanish dance was influenced by his trips to Spain and Northern Africa. He uses dramatic lighting effects in the painting and contrasting black and white for the flamenco dancer’s attire. It’s his most theatrical work.
The painting caught the attention of heiress Isabella Stewart Gardner in 1888 and today resides in the cloister gallery of her museum.
