What are they searching for?
In the immortal words of Jack Sparrow ...
“Freedom.”
For many seafarers, both men and women alike, taking to the sea is about one thing, about THAT one thing, and solely that.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Rhadmin is an Aulm, proud of his people's nautical history. He's never plucked parasites off a giant rakefish, but he learns fast.
Lonotun is Zocheian. They too have a nautical history, but they also have a ridiculous level of Army/Navy rivalry, and he used to be in the Army.

There are a few sailing traditions, so the exact gear differs from place to place. Generally though, most larger ships will have one or more mages to manipulate the winds/water if necessary, and they're powered so they don't necessarily have to use sails.

The MCs of Prophecies find themselves on a ship of "sailors" who all have cutlasses, and most have hook hands or peg legs. The captain has all three, plus an eyepatch. His parrot has an eyepatch, a peg leg, and a hook on one wing; it also breathes fire for some damn reason.

The easy answer is professional, it’s not untrue.
When we see vessels in my setting it’s usually the inter-island ferries, and the crews act professionally. Even saving my MC after he jumped into the water off a cliff.
But I haven’t explored the professions in depth
#SeptemberWorldbuilders, good morning! Hope everyone is having a happy and healthy month so far. I've been enjoying my time offline. Still, I want to keep this going so I can read your answers when I come back!
What are sailors and fishermen like in your world?
Arlise has been at sea before, with a brief stint aboard a corsair in her adventuring days, but she’s not very fond of it (at least not until she meets Earc). Things tend to go disastrously for her at sea, and she’s not a strong swimmer.
#SeptemberWorldbuilders I had way too much fun with this today! I love Celestan boats, and I can't help wondering exactly how they're rigged and how the sails would work in tandem to both propel and steer the boat, likely with the help of a leeboard. (Purple sails mark this as a boat from FirstDay.)
The main character of my previous WIP lives in an island, and sees the sea every single day. She's never sailed, though, and only stepped into docked boats for work, but stepped out before they left.

The main characters simply have an Odyssey/Immram voyage in the ocean, stopping at several islands, meeting sea creatures & monsters. And a vicious sea demon is on their trail (serving as a villainous Poseidon figure)
Day 20. Has your MC been to an ocean?
Vivian loves it.

Ashe comes from the South Library, so she doesn't have a very intimate connection with the coast. At best, it's a place she's been to a couple of times but nothing special
But there are a handful of other characters that are deeply tied to the sea. Abelha in particular

Weslea thinks the sea is beautiful. He lives in New York City, and formerly lived in New Canaan, Connecticut, a suburb of NYC, so he's seen the ocean in a relative sense, despite the fact he's never actually been to a 🧵

Day 20
Yes. Desi lives, or rather, lived in Vancouver, BC. She spent a lot of time along the coast.
The son of a fisherman, HOLAA opens in Tal's terraced fishing village, perched on cliffs overlooking a natural beach harbor. Leaving only semi-willingly, he's often homesick even as he explores the wider world

Due to the very "split" nature of the world after The Forest, The Mountains, and The Ocean as entities appeared, the native cultures stayed separated by their own larger land (1/6)
Of all my MCs, Gino & Lysander have the closest relationship with the ocean. While they've roamed the beach often, neither has been on a ship, though for different reasons.
Both live in coastal cities, though Lysander lives closer to the ocean by far.
