#FantasyIndiesSpooktober Day 4: Definitions of bravery. For myself, haven't thought about it much. For Sharrec, it's mainly standing up for your friends/family, whether physically or metaphorically, even against overwhelming odds. #WritingCommunity

I define bravery as being scared to do the thing, but doing it anyway.

Rebecca would define bravery as pushing through and doing what's most logistic and right, no matter the personal consequences.

For Hailey, being out feels brave to her. Living publically as a girl feels momentous for her.

But Hailey also sees bravery in others. Like Dannie, who used to be ashamed of her height and weight but is now super popular, doing great! Hail thinks she's very brave.

4) Definition of Bravery

My definition of bravery is the same as Mark Twain or Nelson Mendela. To paraphrase: courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to act in spite of it.

Renard would agree with me, and maybe throw in some Dune "I must not fear" as well.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 4 - How do your MCs define bravery?

Iberto carries with him an aura of overwhelming terror everywhere he goes. He considers anyone able to withstand that aura and look him in the face to be brave.

Day 4 - How do your MCs define bravery?

My MCs are a pretty motley bunch but they can all agree that bravery means doing what must be done despite how frightening or dangerous it is. All of them rise to this over the course of the WIP

Bonnie would probably say bravery is letting her conscience get the better of her. I think she tends to equate it with selflessness. Which is something she does more often than some of her supervillain colleagues care for.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 4: How do I/my MC define bravery?

Confront reality, then deal with it. Do what's right, even if doing so comes with a personal cost. Courage means looking those costs in the eye and accepting them.

Sometimes that means looking yourself in the eye.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 4/Oct/26: How do you/your character define being brave?

I'm going to paraphrase a quote from Jon Pertwee. Being brave, to me, isn't about being fearless. It's about being scared and doing it anyway.

In fact, being scared can be beneficial, as it means you'll pay attention.

4. Bravery

Jyn: "Bravery is standing between what you love and any threat that comes for them. Even when you run, you let your loves ones run first. Bravery is protection."

Ratatoskr: "Bravery? You sound like that old fart Thor! Just drop a quip and run! Problem solved!"

Day 3: Book Snippets

Two book snippets today. Both first lines of Mapmaker--Book 1 and The Legend of Damndrake (not the prologue).

#booksky #indieauthor #booksnippet #epicfantasybook #epicfantasy

Book Snippet for The Legend of Damndrake with store icons and a picture of the book in the background. "Like begging dogs, a drift of humans gathered on the hot roadside, waiting to petition the castle's steward. Where any moment, he’d emerge from the servant’s door to announce the day’s labor needs.

Blaze and I stood a short distance away. Two dragons in human-form; we shouldn’t have been there, but if I wanted a job—this was my chance.

The humans shot sidelong glances, probably already guessing what we were, but they left us undisturbed. To distract myself from the petitioners’ furtive glimpses, I concentrated on the cowbirds harrying a nearby lemon tree with their enthusiastic insect foraging."Book Snippet for Mapmaker--Book 1 with store icons and a picture of the book in the background. "Like the sputtering breath of the gods, strong winds battered Aleeya, catching at her bound wings and threatening to send her into the sea.

An ill omen, the windstorm pummeled the docks of the City of Ka’ai’s First Fjord. The strong gusts forced wingmen out of the sky, though it didn’t lessen the activity on the piers and boardwalk servicing the unending ships that reached the western shores of Helacon. The white gulls’ raucous calling competed with shouted orders. And the strong briny scent of the sea reminded Aleeya she was far from the stately halls of the senate or the quiet library of the temple."

Day 3 of #FantasyIndiesSpooktober

Another unedited snippet from Book 8 of my Oracle of Delphi series WIP. This is from about 160 CE.

#WritingCommunity

An important visitor to Delphi and the Sanctuary of Apollo had arrived, and everyone had been ordered to accommodate him in every way possible.

When Pausanias the geographer approached the gates, Senior Priests of Apollo Titus Flavius Aristotimos and Lucius Gellius Xenagoras, son of Lucius Gellius Xenagoras, quickly took him in hand to guide him through the temenos and answer questions.

Pythiai Antiochis and Dianeme only heard about it later, from the young Lucius Gellius, as he spoke with enthusiasm of the geographer's project.

"He says he is writing a comprehensive guide to Hellas," he said. "A written account of all things Hellene, as he put it." List of daily post prompts for indie fantasy authors for October.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober Day 3: Saturday snippet. This is from This Dark Road: Freed. For context, Sharrec has just come out of a seizure; Zani was trying to hold his mouth open so Arathel could give him his medication. #WritingCommunity

Photo, no description	I heard Arathel’s voice then, but her words weren’t for me. Had she been the one who slapped my face? I must have struggled more violently than usual. “Let me see your hand,” she said.
“You got lucky,” Yvan said, a trace of laughter in his voice. “Seen a man get a finger bit off that way once.”
“Funny; I don’t feel lucky,” Zani answered sourly. “Next time we should put a stick in his mouth instead.”
I winced. It would have been bad enough if I’d bitten one of the men. And Zani was likely to hold a grudge too.
