#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 8. MC Phobias

Braelyn's two big phobias are snakes and certain levels of heights (basically anything above 5 stories and she starts getting really anxious). I don't feel like I need to mention Velimiar 😂

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 7. POV and tense preferences

I don't mind 1st person POV, but I definitely prefer reading/writing in 3rd person POV. I'm also a past tense author, I don't think I've ever written a present tense story.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 6. WIP Villain(s)

Velimiar is the main villain for "Son of Embers", and it's honestly one of my favorite parts of the overarching series because it's Braelyn's first time seeing him in a few years, and the 🌟TENSION🌟 .

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 5. What would your MC wear to a Halloween party?

If she's with Esta, Brae would be forced to wear something skintight or luxurious 😅 she'd much rather wear a simple costume, like a cat or a witch.

Have a snippet.

Kira stopped as they came in sight of the first of the temples they would be visiting. It was, as many smaller temples were, not dedicated to any single godde but decorated with carvings representing the most popular goddes of the region. Iberto had speculated once that this 'generic-ness' of the temples had made it easier for the monks to take them over.
Balance-Called, riding on a sturdy mule, glanced her way, curious. "You have sudden thoughts."
Kira chewed her lip. "Hannu had trouble with the monks at the smaller temples when she traveled before. I'm wondering what we'll find when we go in there."
"More trouble would not surprise me." Amir shook his head. “Don’t worry. Your humble minstrel will keep it from getting out of hand.” His smile was a hunter’s eager grin.
"You are not alone in these travels. Come. Let us continue." Balance-Called led the way down the street to the temple.
Kira snorted. "It's not me I'm worried for." But she followed the Balance-Called.

Today's snippet is also from Darkness Beyond the Wall (tentative title), my prequel novella to The Brumewalker Archives.

MC Lysander and some of his comrades find themselves chased up a tree by Dusklings after falling into an ambush.

Day 10 of #FantasyIndiesSpooktober

Another unedited snippet from Book 8 of my Oracle of Delphi series WIP. This is from about 166 CE.

Pythia Antiochis had been buried for several months, and yet Pythia Dianeme had not yet selected a Pythian Priestess to replace her.

"I cannot decide," she complained to her slave, Siran. As tradition had dictated, she'd freed Antiochis's slave Lois and purchased Siran from the market soon after Antiochis's death. But choosing a new Pythian Priestess had proved to be much more difficult.

Siran was from Armenia in the East, brought to Rome then sold to subsequent slave traders until she arrived in the traveling slave market that stopped at Delphi three times each year. She'd told Dianeme that she'd been a priestess in the temple of Anahit, their goddess of healing, fertility, wisdom, and water. And so, Dianeme felt comfortable speaking to Siran about certain things.

"Why not?" Siran asked.

"Whoever I choose will live here," Dianeme replied. "What if she talks too much? What if she does not talk at all? What if --"

"Mistress," Siran interrupted. "Listen to yourself. How will you know unless you meet them and speak to them? You may be worrying for nothing."

Truth was, Dianeme had been stricken with brief periods of inexplicable panic ever since Antiochis had passed to the Underworld, and she did not know what to do about them. She took a deep breath and released it.

"I know. You are right. I just..." she broke off and sighed.

Day 10: Saturday Snippet

My entire Draghi Chronicles series has chapter epigraphs. Here's one!

#dragons #dragon #indieauthor #epicfantasy

On a dark, fiery background: Dragon albinism comes from two sources: sun bleaching, often occurring in wayward dragons living for extended periods in the Blasted Sands, and a birth defect. Many humans and dragons fiercely hold that the condition, regardless of origin, indicates the afflicted are cursed. Hatchlings born with albinism are often disposed of in a humane manner. ~ ~ Draghi Physicians’ Reference, Volume 4, 2nd Edition. Epigraph from The Legend of Damndrake.

“That’s Kirana, right?” she said. “The one everyone’s been talking about?”
Bonnie made a small noncommittal sound. “I think so.”
“She’s been all over my feed lately,” Beth went on. “Like, actually doing things. Not just posing for cameras.”

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 10: Saturday Snippet

In THE SECOND STONE, a hidden prince, Hans, returns to his home world possessing few clues as to what to believe or who to trust. Encountering Dorilian Sordaneon is a rough way to begin.

Left side of image is the book cover of THE SECOND STONE, book 3 of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover is blue-green and shows two young men on a ship approaching an immense fantasy City. Many other ships also sail toward the City.

Right side is a text excerpt from THE SECOND STONE showing a portion of the first full meeting between young prince Hans and the City's ruler, Dorilian Sordaneon:

“Well?” the Hierarch prompted after an appropriately uncomfortable interval. “What am I supposed to do about you?”
Taken by surprise, Hans jerked to attention. The question had been put to him expectantly. “I don’t know,” he stammered. He was quite amazed he could speak at all. “I—I thought maybe you would know what to do.”
His stare withering, Dorilian turned to Tiflan. “This is ridiculous. Are you absolutely certain Marenthro did not leave instructions pinned on him?”

Here's another one from Rites of Departure 😁

blue background with black text

Text reads:
It's well after midnight, and I've forgotten that my living counterpart requires sleep in order to function. "I'll look around the premises while you're asleep. I'll need something to keep myself occupied."
He grimaces. "Promise you won't upset any of the guests. It's a *nice* inn, Zel. I'd hate to lose my good standing with the proprietor due to your antics."
I feign outrage. "Antics? Do you truly think so little of me?"
In truth, I *have* been considering...something. What I did would have been dependent on what I uncovered during my exploration. Old habits don't always die with one's body, you know.

Day 6

Othos Unbound definitely has a good number of villains, but I would say that these are currently the most prevalent.

Rettick is the main villain and the one pulling the strings -white beard

Hadien is his second, and is struggling with the morality of his allegiance

09: Free Friday

Marketing Friday! I have a fantasy novella, standalone, about a sleazy banker who cuts a deal with a god of chaos in order to avoid his well-deserved death. Excellent reviews so far. Check it out!

books2read.com/u/3G72J8

Unfortunate's cover. Shows a bloodied man in a dark alley, wearing a suit and clutching a rock. A storm rages outside the alley, with lightning streaking across the sky, and a single gas lamp illuminates the scene. A dead body rests near the character, with only its legs visible, and an orange eye spies the scene from within a shadow.

The title is at the top of the cover, with a D20 in place of the letter O, and my name (Ayrton Silva) is written on a wall next to the character like a graffiti.

9. Books to read before 2027

Currently in the middle of LJ Ross' Heavenfield - I love her books, being from the north of England myself.
I'd also like to read I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons by Peter S. Beagle. Title and premise alone have sold me!
