In this light, it is likely that ideas like instinct will have as much importance in the future as the convoluted theories of astrologers who, prior to the heliocentric revolution in thought, attempted to make sense out of the movement of the stars. Consciousness re- search, with its findings in related fields such as quantum physics, transpersonal psychology, prenatal and perinatal psychology, and the new biology will, in time, demonstrate to all of science (it has been demonstrated to those of us in these fields already) that it is con- sciousness, Experience, subjectivity that is fundamental to Reality. Science will eventually acknowledge that insubstantial yet profound no-thing — that Experience, Consciousness, or mental-emotional stuff — is shared between beings, who we formerly thought were absolutely separate from each other but who we will then know actually are not and actually share identity, in a sense. In doing so it will bring clarity to our understanding of these fantastical behaviors of planetmates and make the idea of instinct to be like the emperor with no clothes — sad and laughable. Sixteenth Descent — Work A major development came in with hierarchy and its patterns of dominance and submission which was a monumental change in the experience of life of humans. With dominant folks directing affairs, lesser people were brought into line to work toward the satisfaction of the needs of those above and would have little time left over to attend to their own. We created work when we began buying other’s time and selling our own in exchange for survival. This created an onerous existence for humanity which was vastly different from the rich experiences of life that our ancestors, previous to that, had enjoyed. Seventeenth Descent — Religion This controlling not being enough, the elite added still more tools to their arsenals of domination. THE THIRD DESCENT — PREMATURITY Page 21 …gestations and the near perfect nurturing for an additional twelve months by a Divinely-designed biological process in the womb. We began the process of becoming human, meaning being separate from all other Earth Citizens, at the time that narrow pelves, nine-month (premature) gestations, birth pain and trauma for moth- ers and newborns, and dependency on caregivers for the first few years of life became the norm. So it was that standing up ... while not strictly a fall from grace, in and of itself ... set the whole process of human’s descent from Nature in motion. Secondary Altriciality and the Origins of Culture The other part of prematurity is the helplessness after birth and the extra dependency of the baby on maternal care for survival and growth. The additional time of helplessness that humans have is termed secondary altriciality. With prematurity came secondary altriciality. And with secondary altriciality came culture. Let me explain.

However, this process of forgetting, as I called it — this “descent” through the four falls from grace, which creates a person’s ego — is essentially a neurotic one. It is neurotic, because it is essentially maladaptive and self-destructive and creates an unreal self (using Janov’s term) which is inauthentic and which ultimately desires its own revolution or destruction in a spiritual process of re-membering and which inevitably, whether in one lifetime or many, brings that about. It is neurotic also in that it is a derailment of one’s healthy unfolding of personality and a deflection of that natural process onto substitute pathways. Which alternate pathways are, for the person, ever more inauthentic, increasingly more self-sabotaging, and pathetically more trivial, at each stage of descent from “grace.” As I put it, the end result of the neurotic process of diminishment of consciousness through the four falls from grace which creates the Ego and is responsible for the much talked about “ego strength” proposed by Ego psychologists ... the end result of all this was an insensitive sort — the kitty-drowners and butterfly-mashers of the world. INTRODUCTION Page 16 Child Abuse and Human Tool Use — Humans Become Abominations in Nature Separation from the Divine meant separation from all else, all others, even one’s own offspring, along with increasing isolation, and increasing reinforcement of the alien, backwards, consciousness construct, Ego. Humans began secretly to think, “There’s nothing really alive but me.” Consequently, newborns were seen in exactly the same way as other beings being controlled — as just as worthy an investment, and little more, as raising kidnapped Earth Citizens and just as acceptable for coercion, for forced enlistment, in the survival schemes of the now rootless, directionless sedentary humans. All these controlling tendencies of all-seen-as-not-ego were alike in their estimation and implementation: control of life ways; all Earth Citizens ... fauna and flora; other humans; and dependent newborns. They were all seen increasingly as “things” to be manipulated and used for Ego survival. They were all gradually deprived of their status as being conscious, of having consciousness, as being akin to self and one’s consciousness.

Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth. This postnatal time of one year, comparable to the time our nearest relatives in Nature spend in the womb, would require careful, focused, and thoroughly all-encompassing care by the mothers or other caregivers. It would be accordingly exhausting and time intensive. This meant that needs of the infant could never be perfectly satisfied. Human mothers now needed also more expertise in child-caring than those in Nature. The knowledge and skill required could never be ideal. Indeed, there would be a gap in what the baby needed and what mothers could provide. Compared to Nature, human infants were needy, difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating in their being so helpless and so long to mature. This would have consequences for child abuse later on, but in the beginning it simply meant human mothers had a much greater and more difficult workload than their sisters in Nature. Thus, premature birth and narrower pelves — concomitant with bipedalism — won out. THE FARTHER REACHES OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE Page 39 Constructing the Matrix — the Four Stages of Forgetting Following upon these discoveries I realized that there were definite stages in the buildup of these grids and they corresponded to significant events in one’s life: The events are conception, birth, the primal scene, and the Identity stage of life. I called these the four falls from grace. Each event represented a diminution of Self or authentic beingness and a retreat from an innate spirituality and patterns of bliss and expanded perception, which characterizes us all at our beginnings and can actually be called Divine.7 Without being aware of the theories of Mott, Shoham, or Wasdell, and based only on personal experience of deep Primal states and observing and facilitating others in these states, along with relevant real life experience of my self and others and pertinent, salient research, I realized that life was a process of reduction of awareness from an original omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent state — a Divinity, a Divine state, a Godhead, a Source — which sets up the process of Ego construction and human experience.

Pregnancies would be shorter — nine months — allowing for the economic and survival advantages of that. As for the long period of maturation required for the brain, that would be taken care of by the infant being born more and more premature in order to get the head out at all, regardless that it was still traumatic. Thus, roughly half the brain’s development would occur in the womb under the direction of a process of Nature determined and perfected over the course of millions of years. The other half would happen after birth, under the care and direction of considerably less perfect humans. We are born premature. Relative to virtually all the rest of Nature, whose development of its brain occurs under the aegis of Nature, that is, before birth, we are half-borns. We are only half ready for life at the time of birth. Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. But what remains is something stronger. You see humanity in a new light. It is one that opens a door on a reality greater than the one humans have contrived for their benefit alone. In doing this, you are invited to a return to unity with Nature and a harmonious understanding of our role, perhaps our destiny, in the grand scheme of things. Central to all this is an acknowledgement and understanding of how we have come to set ourselves against Nature and all life on this planet. That is the starting point for a re-visioning of humans in Nature: We must begin with looking at the consequences of our estrangement. Certainly, as in any other process of revelation, seeing clearly allows an opportunity for transformation, whereas staying stuck in counterproductive habits of thought leads only to increasing stagnation of life process and a slow, though feverish, slide to death. Beyond that, vistas of larger possibilities for humanity abound. One might very well see their own destiny and future within them. To foresee a path for ourselves or humanity, requires not only a conceptualization of a possible goal, but an honest understanding of where we are in relation to it. It is to that, that we now turn. Alongside this radical acceptance and honoring of the “Now,” was a radical acceptance and empathy, from the facilitator, of whatever came up in the client in the course of a session and in whatever form. Certainly we directed clients to go “deeper,” with whatever was going on, but we did not “bust” — thus we retained a certain degree of humility regarding our supposed therapeutic powers and wisdom, in that respect — and we required of ourselves to have gone far and deep in our own process so that we would not, even unconsciously, seek to direct or derail or channel any feelings of the client’s onto routes more intellectually or more emotionally satisfying to us. If you think about this kind of radical unconditional regard and you compare it with some of the techniques used on spiritual paths ... some of which might involve a truly all-accepting and profoundly loving guru ... and you bring to mind the kind of euphoric, all-encompassing acceptance and contentment many of us have experienced in our early womb states — what Grof calls BPM I experience — you might see why our way in Denver might be more conducive than Janov’s in making possible access to earlier states. With those states related, specifically, to joy and to spiritual grids, you can understand how a different and more positive type of “post-primal” person, from that described as resulting from Janov’s method alone, could be brought forth.
