2. Desert culture

Azrakia has no culture. Not anymore. Their traditions, their songs, the entire lives of the dragonborn clan living there has been consumed by war. They live to fight, tragically blind to the fact they have so little to fight for anymore.

Due to the temporal instabilities, ripper swarms aren't as big an issue. However, those same instabilities attract a number of aevovores.
One such aevovore is the hoursinker. A plant that sends out tendrils along the ground towards the boundaries between two time streams.

The Mokele mbembe is a large herbivore that traverses parts of Aywu Akfa in search of cacti.
Sometimes people domesticate these animals and ride them to traverse the desert.
Here are two adventurers in a Spinifex field.

The Xholari snail is a massive living machine which is strongly connected to the Sal:a'hu-E:Ru'din, as is the Kyramimus, a tall, bipedal, running lizard, that they ride as a means to get about.

The burrowing lobsters—I’ve talked about them before—live in the plains and also canyons in the mountains. Then there are runnerbirds (velociraptors meet secretary birds, basically) and bone tortoise (named for the white of its shell) and “mice” that are tiny marsupials.

We got cacti. Lots of cacti. And tumbleweeds. There are also petrified, dead-looking trees that are just naturally camouflaged with a sun/heat resistant overly dry exterior and a healthy plant inside that gets sun from flowers that look like fungi.

One of the things mentioned that's from the desert is a watervine. it's an uncommon plant that grows outside of the oases. it sprouts up randomly but it's chock full of water, so if you come across one, cut it open for some hydration!

Also, Loke says there's lots of bugs

#OctoberWorldbuilders, hello friends! Tell me about the flora and fauna in your desert. What lives there? Also, it doesn't strictly have to be "flora" or "fauna." If you've got something that defies these terms, but still count as living, by all means talk about them!

Tell me all about the plants and animals there!
(Other lifeforms that aren’t strictly plants or animals are also included!)

3- #OctoberWorldbuilders- Amarlock has beautiful floating gardens and aqueducts.

@ellielieberman.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 1:52 AM

2- #OctoberWorldbuilders- Amarlock is very community-centered. Everyone takes care of each other. They don't understand the concept of Orphanages, for instance.

They use tents (they're nomadic), but they've built it into warm, comfortable works of art that they can assemble and disassemble quickly. The material is mostly treated skins and wood/grasses for the structure (the wood can be difficult to get).

#OctoberWorldbuilders For their permanent structures, Hiddigahans favor sandstone and a white adobe-like rammed earth that reflects light. Their roofs are built to catch and redirect breezes into the interior.

Most of the caravan towns are built into cliffs and other rock formations (think Petra or Mesa Verde), so stone is the main building material for settled Tarik. This goes a long, long ways towards keeping their homes cool despite the heat.

Most building are stone. All buildings use cross ventilation. Many have a double-roof: a layer of thin stone held up by columns above the main roof, shading the house and allowing air flow between the upper and lower roofs.

Stave’s Hall is the biggest settlement, and it’s completely contained within a hollowed out plateau volcano. All of the homes and buildings are carved out of stone in solid pieces.

Think southwest Native American dwellings carved out of canyon walls, that sort of thing.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 3: Today, as on worlds across the Tithriki Administrative Expanse, structures on the high plateau are built with self-printing ceramics and bioengineered chitin. That's where the commonalities end. On Tithrik, biomechanical constructs are strictly limited to the humid lowlands.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 3: Millennia ago, the cultures of the eyeward High Desert would have used stone and brick, replaced in early modernity by concrete and fungal composites. Still, even into our post-contact age, anteyeward cities were largely built underground.

@catherinewinters.comOct 3, 2026, 11:56 PM

#OctoberWorldbuilders 3: Given the fluctuating temperatures of the subarctic plateau on a world with a 375-hour day, insulation and heat pumps are a must! Even the above-ground settlements of the high desert's eyeward hemisphere make heavy use of the ground as a heat sink.
